SOUTH BOHEMIA AND BOHEMIAN FOREST The central gate is the so-called Červená Brána (Red Gate) leading to the first courtyard (called also "Romp Ground") ahead of the castle. The first courtyard was used for tournaments and games. The entrance to the Lower Courtyard is across a stone bridge over a deep moat with bears (the so-called Bear Moat - bred here since 1558). Štěpánek Netolický added the second belt of defensive walls with bastions, moat and rampart to the simple town walls. The famous Czech puppeteer Matěj Kopecký, who lived in the neighbouring village Koloděje nad Lužnicí, is buried in the cemetery here.. The Baroque Calvary from 1753 can be seen in the grove near the road to the small village Březnice. The observation tower with a nice view of the town stands above the confluence of the SOUTH BOHEMIA AND BOHEMIAN FOREST The conspicuous Ostrý mountain (Sharp - 1,280 m) with two peaks towers above the Czech-German border about 8 km west of the small village Hojsova Stráž and 12 km north-west of the town Železná Ruda.. The mountain is also nick named Jezerní Hora (Lake Mount) or Prsa Matky Boží ("Bosoms of the Virgin") for its two peaks.
