INTRODUCTION
Under the renewed organization we plan to actively cooperate and carry on Deaf movement with the power and energy our fellow members. On July 2012, House of Councilors held “Children’s Diet – Revival for the Future”, that had not been held for 12 years. 150 children chosen from all over Japan took the role of child members of the Diet HISTORY | JAPANESE FEDERATION OF THE DEAF History. 1947. May 25. JFD is founded at Ikaho Hot Springs resort in Gunma Prefecture. 1948. May 1. The first issue of the Japanese Deaf News is published. May 10. JFD holds its 1st National Congress inKyoto.

It cooperates with the United Nations and other international organizations and professional groups in matters related to Deafness. JFD joined the WFD in 1960. OUR MOVEMENT FOR PROMOTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SIGN Our Movement for Promoting the Establishment of a Sign Language Law in Japan. The Circumstances Around Deaf People in Japan. For over 70 years, the Japanese Federation of the Deaf has, has fought to realize an environment where sign language communication and THE FIVE SIGN LANGUAGE RIGHTS The 5 Rights Created through a Domestic Research Survey by the Project to Push the Creation of a Sign Language Law. The Japanese Federation of the Deaf (JFD) received assistance from the Nippon Foundation in 2010 and started the project to push to creation of a sign language law, where they ran domestic and international surveys. ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEAF MOVEMENT Amendment of Article 11, Civil Code. Until 1979, deaf people were legally regarded as quasi-incompetent persons (people who were pronounced as incompetent by the family court, due to the mental and/or physical diminished capacity and wasteful habit. JFD AND JDSF HOLD 1ST MEETING OF DEAFLYMPICS 2025 BID The live broadcast of the meeting on YouTube Live began with a 3-minute delay due to a sound issue. Closed-caption and picture of a sign language interpreter were arranged on the screen, to provide the conditions in which all participants, including the deaf and hearing people, or who understand sign language and who doesn’t, can accessthe information.
GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION RELATED TO THE Great East Japan Earthquake information related to the Deaf. JFD launched the “ Central Headquarters for Disaster Relief for Deaf People in the Great East Japan Earthquake ” immediately after the earthquake struck on March 11th, 2011. The Asian Deaf Friendship Fund provided several support with the aim to help promote and improve educational opportunities for deaf people, with special focus on promoting education of deafchildren.

The bill of revision of the Basic Act for Persons with Disabilities, which states “language (including sign language)”, was approved unanimously in the House of Councilors on July 29, 2011. It was promulgated and came into effect on August 5. The revised Act includes a statement of “language (including sign language)” in the Article3
