The 1977 flood was a blow to Johnstown’s increasingly fragile economy. Many downtown firms damaged by the flood did not reopen or moved to the suburbs. Employment at Bethlehem Steel dropped by 4,000. Between 1970 and 1980, the city’s population dropped from 42,221 to 34,221, a 19.4% decline, and the 1977 flood is a major reason why. HISTORY OF COAL IN CAMBRIA COUNTY The area's rich coal deposits made the steel industry possible here. Johnstown is located in Cambria County, which is rich in coal resources. As early as the 1760s, white settlers in the Conemaugh Valley dug coal, which was used in the forges and blacksmith shops of the first villages of the 1790s and onward. Johnstown was founded in 1800 by Joseph Schantz, also called Joseph Johns, a Pennsylvania German immigrant. The first ethnic church in Johnstown was founded by German immigrants by about 1810. By the 1830s, Johnstown had developed into a small town, and the dominantethnic
PUSH AND PULL OF IMMIGRATION: LETTERS FROM HOME Push: Deciding to leave. If everything is going well at home, most people don't want to leave. Something must push them to make such a big change. Most often people are pushed by not having enough money or land to feed and clothe their families. Others leave home because they are not free to practice their religion. Some leave because of war. THE CLUB AND THE DAM The club owned the Western Reservoir, the dam that created it, and about 160 acres of land in the area. The club renamed the reservoir, calling it Lake Conemaugh. A 47-room clubhouse, featuring a huge dining room that could seat 150, was the main building on the club’s land. There were also 16 privately-owned “cottages,” actuallyhouses

Founded in 1852, the Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown made an important contribution to American industrialism – it is considered one of the greatest of the early modern iron and steel works. The 1977 flood was a blow to Johnstown’s increasingly fragile economy. Many downtown firms damaged by the flood did not reopen or moved to the suburbs. Employment at Bethlehem Steel dropped by 4,000. Between 1970 and 1980, the city’s population dropped from 42,221 to 34,221, a 19.4% decline, and the 1977 flood is a major reason why.Search:
