Power plants everywhere generate electricity by converting mechanical power such as the rotation of a turbine into electrical power. In a coal-fired steam station, the combustion of coal turns water into steam and the steam in turn drives turbine generators to produce electricity. Power plants today rely either on fossil fuels, nuclear fission, or renewable sources like hydro. The tokamak isWORKING AT ITER
The ITER Organization brings together people from all over the world to be part of a thrilling human adventure in southern France—building the ITER Tokamak. We require the best people in every domain. In a high pressure environment, we offer challenging full time assignments in a wide range of areas and encourage applications from candidates with all levels of experience, fromrecent
NOW AVAILABLE: VIRTUAL VISITS OF ITER The ITER Organization has added a permanent virtual visit option to its visit program. Developed in reply to the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessary restrictions to in-person visiting, the virtual visit now co-exists alongside other options, including individual and group visits, on the ITER webpage dedicated to visitors. SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT A multiple-layer barrier system has been designed to protect against the spread or release of tritium into the environment. Beyond the first level of the safety confinement barrier, the vacuum vessel, is a second level of security comprising the buildings and advanced detritiation systems for the recovery of tritium from gas and liquids. MILESTONES AROUND THE WORLD Producing fusion energy, it soon became clear, would require marshalling the creative forces, technological skills, and financial resources of the international community. The Joint European Torus (JET) in the UK, in operation since 1983, was a first step in this direction. JET, which is collectively used by more than 40 European laboratories, achieved the world's first controlled release ofITER MEMBERS
As signatories to the ITER Agreement, the ITER Members China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United States will share in the cost of project construction, operation and decommissioning, and also share in the experimental results and any intellectual property generated by the project. Twenty years of collaborative research experiments are planned on the machine.MAGNETS - ITER.ORG
The ITER magnet system will be the largest and most integrated superconducting magnet system ever built. Ten thousand tonnes of magnets, with a combined stored magnetic energy of 51 Gigajoules (GJ), will produce the magnetic fields that will initiate, confine, shape and control the ITER plasma. Manufactured from niobium-tin (Nb3Sn) or niobium-titanium (Nb-Ti), the magnets become CAPTURING THE ENERGY The helium nucleus carries an electric charge which will be subject to the magnetic fields of the tokamak and remain confined within the plasma, contributing to its continued heating. However, approximately 80 percent of the energy produced is carried away from the plasma by the neutron which has no electrical charge and is therefore unaffectedby magnetic fields.

UNLIMITED ENERGY
Fusion, the nuclear reaction that powers the Sun and the stars, is a potential source of safe, non-carbon emitting and virtually limitless energy. Harnessing fusion's power is the goal of ITER, which has been designed as the key experimental step between today's fusion research machines and tomorrow's fusion power plants.AMAZING MACHINE
One million components, ten million parts ... the ITER Tokamak will be the largest and most powerful fusion device in the world. Designed to produce 500 MW of fusion power for 50 MW of input heating power (a power amplification ratio of 10), it will take its place in history as the first fusion device to create net energy. MASSIVE CONSTRUCTION ITER construction is underway now. On the ITER site, buildings are rising; abroad, machine and plant components are leaving factories on three continents. In the years ahead, over 4,000 workers will be required for on-site building, assembly and installation activities.LATEST NEWS
