KEY CONCEPTS

Key Concepts. atman, creation, dharma, karma, maya, moksha. This simple diagram shows the three basic concepts that form the basis for Hindu thought. Different schools present various opinions on the nature of each “concept” and the relationships between them. CREATION – HEART OF HINDUISM There is no one simple account of creation, and there are many detailed and inter-related stories. Central is the narration of the sacrifice of the primal being (purusha), found in the Rig Veda.On the metaphysical level, the universe is created from sound (vak).Sound corresponds to ether, the subtlest of the five material elements.

CORE VALUES

Values are closely connected to the execution of dharma in terms of specified duties, both spiritual and socio-religious. Sanatana-dharma supports the ideal of shared values, the spiritual virtues that are recognised by all authoritative religious traditions. These characteristics are considered to be inherent within the heart of all beings, and to be invoked from within rather than imposed

THE FOUR ASHRAMS

Ashram means “a place of spiritual shelter.”. Each stage of life is not only a natural part of the journey from cradle to grave, but a time at which spirituality can be developed. The four varnas, accept ashrams as depicted in the table below: Brahmacari. Grihasta. Vanaprastha. Sannyasi. Shudra. no SHRUTI: THE UPANISHADS AND VEDANTA SUTRAS The Vedanta Sutras (also called the Brahma Sutras) are an attempt by the sage Vyasa (Badarayana) to systematise the teachings of the Upanishads. There are a total of 550 aphorisms divided between four chapters. Various authors wrote lengthy commentaries upon them, giving rise to the many different and often conflicting schools of Vedanta

HINDUISM IN BRITAIN TODAY There are about 800,000 Hindus living in Britain today. Most are of Gujarati origin (70%), and a significant number from Punjab (15%). Others are from Bengal, South India, Shri Lanka, Guyana, Fiji, Mauritius, and parts of Africa. Most came here via East Africa or from India itself. Throughout the UK, there are about 135 Hindu temples

THE SHRINE – HEART OF HINDUISM The shrine is the sacred centre of the mandir. It houses the temple deities and is usually situated at one end of the main hall.To the side or close by is a room in which the priests prepare for worship according to a fixed daily schedule. Often only the priests, freshly bathed and wearing clean clothes, are allowed to enter these sacred

areas.

DRESS – HEART OF HINDUISM A Punjabi Hindu woman, dressed in the salwarkameez. It consists of a tunic ( kameez) covering loosely fitting trousers ( salwar ). Occasionally, a chunni (shawl) is used to cover the head and shoulders. Sikh women wear the same costume. Like other aspects of Indian culture, dress has religious as well as aesthetic significance.

VARNASHRAMA DHARMA

Dharma (Part 2): Varnashrama-dharma. According to Hindu texts, Varnashrama-dharma is not a man-made system but refers to natural classifications that appear to various degrees in all human societies. Individuals have different innate tendencies for work and exhibit a variety of personal qualities. HINDU TEMPLE SCHOOL VISITS Classroom Speakers. INSIDE: THE MANDIR

Inside the Mandir. A mandir has many internal features, which one can fully appreciate only by visiting. Below we list what we might experience on entering a temple. Some mandirs have fewer facilities, and others far more. The more elaborate are often part of an entire complex that includes residential quarters, guest rooms, and

With its cyclical notion of time, Hinduism teaches that the material world is created not once but repeatedly, time and time again. Additionally, this universe is considered to be one of many, all enclosed “like innumerable bubbles floating in space.”. Within this universe, there are three main regions: the heavenly planets, the

Sanatana-dharma supports the ideal of shared values, the spiritual virtues that are recognised by all authoritative religious traditions. These characteristics are considered to be inherent within the heart of all beings, and to be invoked from within rather than imposed

VALUES AND CONCEPTS

There is naturally a close connection between the values of any tradition and its underlying beliefs or concepts. For example, belief in reincarnation significantly influences Hindu attitudes towards animals, and issues on the sanctity of life, such as abortion.

SCRIPTURE AND GURU

Most Hindus consider a guru essential for spiritual life. The guru speaks on the basis of scripture and helps the disciple understand scriptural knowledge. Spiritual knowledge is often preserved and transmitted by sampradaya (disciplic succession). The guru is often seen as equal to God, either (a) quite literally, or (b) as God’s

representative.
