_BHOOT: PART ONE - THE HAUNTED SHIP, DIRECTED BY BHANU PRATAP SINGH AND STARRING VICKY KAUSHAL, ASHUTOSH RANA, AND AKASH DHAR IN PROMINENT ROLES, TRIES TO BE A JUMPSCARE FEST AND AN ANALYSIS OF A HAUNTED FATHER’S PSYCHE THROUGH THE LENS OF SURREALISM. HOWEVER, IT DOESN’T GO FULL TILT IN EITHER OF THOSE ASPECTS AND HENCE FALLS SHORT OF MAKING A SUBSTANTIAL MARK IN THE HORROR GENRE. THANKFULLY, IT IS WELL PACED AND FEATURES A MOVING PERFORMANCE FROM VICKY._ ------------------------- I am a huge fan of horror movies. Wait, let me correct that. I am a huge fan of good horror movies and I like to believe that I can smell the stench of a bad one from a mile afar. And nothing about _Bhoot: Part One - The Haunted Ship_ was giving me any good vibes. As in, I thought that I was going to check out mentally five minutes into the movie. The first poster looked cliched and uninventive. The teaser didn’t manage to elicit even one horrified expression from me. I felt like the official trailer had revealed way too much. In addition to all that, Dharma Productions’ method of showcasing the scares to promote the movie didn’t help at all. However, despite all that, I emerged out of Bollywood’s latest entry into the horror genre fairly

_Bhoot: Part One - The Haunted Ship_ is written and directed by Bhanu Pratap Singh. It is shot by Pushkar Singh and edited by Bodhaditya Banerjee. The one (very unnecessary) song in this movie is by Akhil Sachdeva and the score Ketan Sodha. The production design is by Aditya Kanwar and the set decoration is by Prachi Deshpande. The movie stars Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Ashutosh Rana, and Akash Dhar. The story revolves around, as the title of the movie mentions, a haunted ship named the Seabird. Back in 2001, the crew of the ship vanished into thin air and around 10 years later (I am not sure about this because there’s just a fleeting shot of a calendar) it shows up at Juhu beach. Now, it’s up to Kaushal’s Prithvi, who works in the Directorate General of Shipping (I guess because it’s not made very clear) to take care of it. But as soon as he steps into it, he realises that part of the crew is still in it. BHANU PRATAP SINGH’S WRITING IS DECENT WHILE EXPLORING THEMES AND FAILS IN THE STORYTELLING DECK. _Bhoot - The Haunted Ship_ starts off exactly how you’d expect a movie that’s about a haunted ship to start i.e. aboard the ship that’s about to be haunted. We see things from Vandana’s perspective, the wife of the ship’s captain and mother to Mira. But on Mira’s third birthday (?), she is abducted by an unseen entity. Then Singh shifts his focus to Prithvi who, despite working in the shipping department, does vigilante work in order to rescue girls being trafficked through containers. Then we are told that he suffers from immense guilt after the death of his wife and daughter, thereby adding reason to his irresponsible actions to save girls from their respective horrible fates. So, when a ship with a possessed girl shows up in his backyard, you can figure out where things are going to go. So, before going into the predictable stuff, allow me to shower some praise on the good stuff that Singh has tried to incorporate into his story. Firstly, major kudos to him for doing away with the scream queen approach of telling the story from a woman’s perspective. I don’t know why but for some reason Indian horror tends to associate haunting due to the inability to move on with women only. But men don’t move on as well and that can be very emotionally scarring, thereby making said haunting understandable and even relatable. Secondly, I liked the use of modern Indian cynicism to counter the incredibly supernatural stuff happening in the movie. It kind of sort of grounded the movie and made the characters feel real. And thirdly, it didn’t shoehorn in a romantic interest (which is something I feared would happen in the 2nd half of the film) to keep the character motivated and instead relied on his goodwill.

Now, let’s get to the bad stuff. Singh’s storytelling is properly bad, and it is worse when you realise that it is a script written in the 21st story. So many properties have used dual timelines so brilliantly, either by interweaving them in various ways or by revealing much later in the film that we are watching two timelines. Singh does it through flashbacks which just happen out of nowhere. The progression of the story isn’t motivated. Things just happen without any rhyme or reason, characters are dumbed to an extent that witnessing them take decisions becomes frustrating, and the way some of them talk is outright infuriating. Well, sometimes they do talk like real people and sometimes they don’t. And the realisation that they could’ve talked like normal people throughout the entire movie wants to make you tear your hair out. I mean just imagine people realistically expressing what they feel when they face unreal levels of horror. What a concept! BHANU PRATAP SINGH, YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE FULL TILT INTO SURREALISM WHILE DIRECTING _BHOOT - THE HAUNTED SHIP_! Indian horror doesn’t have a variety of aesthetics. The only good horror movies that India has delivered _Bhoot_, _Aks_, _Pari_, _Kaun_, _Darna Mana Hai_, _Pari_, _Tumbbad_, _Phobia_, and _Jallikattu_. And apart from _Tumbbad_ and _Jallikattu_, all of them look pretty blah. None of them try to stand out like something like _The Lighthouse_

or _Midsommar_

has done in 2019. That simply bothers me too much! Does _Bhoot – The Haunted Ship_ make me feel like that? Yes and no. I’ll tell you why. As is customary, I’ll deal with the good part first. _Bhoot – The Haunted Ship_ has two incredibly bizarre and surreal moments and devoid of any traditional jump-scares. Those were the moments that shook me. Prithvi, who is known to repeatedly hallucinate about his daughter and wife, is confronted by his daughter and wife again. Both are dripping and repeatedly telling Prithvi that they want to come back, with their voice crackling and increasing. It is something that can happen to anyone who has lost their loved one and hence is scary than a crash zoom on the undead entity aboard Seabird. The second one is when Prithvi thinks that the ship’s ghost has followed him to his home and when he turns around the whole scene cuts to the river in which his wife and daughter had died. Now, he can see his daughter who is calling for him and it is beautifully haunting. This was what was needed throughout the movie! What do we

get? Jump scares!

Yes, your fears are true. _Bhoot – The Haunted Ship_ is filled to the brim with jump scares. The first few are a little surprising, I am not going to lie. I jumped. But that’s mostly because of the loud sound design by Anish John, hideous scoring by Ketan Sodha, and editing by Bodhaditya Banerjee. I am not saying that they’re bad at their work because they’re clearly capable of good horror, as mentioned in the previous paragraph. So is Singh. But for some inexplicable reason, studio pressure or the director’s own decision, all that skill was drowned under the weight of constant scary scenes. If they would’ve just stuck to the awkward humour (that’s achieved through good editing), exploring the themes of trying to be a father after losing your daughter, and diving deep into surrealistic imagery and scenes, extracted more from Aditya Kanwar’s production design (that ship looks scary AF from the inside) this movie would’ve been escalated to the next level. And, I don’t know, it could’ve ended up becoming one of the best horror movies of all time. VICKY KAUSHAL IS NOW THE POSTER BOY OF HORROR MOVIES IN INDIA. Yes, yes, I am coming to Vicky Kaushal. But before that let’s talk a little bit about the supporting cast. Bhumi Pednekar, in her short appearance, has convinced me that she should star in more horror movies. Who knows? Maybe it is the next step in her career. Akash Dhar as Prithvi’s friend Riyaz is excellent. He has the most pragmatic character in his hands, there’s no doubt about that. But he explores every nook and cranny of Riyaz before the credits roll and that’s what I want to see from every supporting character there is. Ashutosh Rana is wasted. I don’t why he keeps choosing these characters who have nothing to do, no depth, and are just exposition machines. The rest of the cast ranges from okay to outright hammy. Some of them are difficult to look at because of the poorly directed scenes and the cringe-inducing make-up. I am sorry, it is what it is.

On the flip side, Vicky Kaushal is consistently great! I don’t know how he does it. I don’t know if I will ever know how he does it. I know why he does it. It’s because he has an appetite for wearing unique characters who face unique situations. And I also know that he has this ability to blow my mind with his performance no matter what role he takes on. In my opinion, he has the biggest factor that the movie works the way it works. There’s not a frame in this movie where he isn’t giving it his hundred percent. There’s not a frame in this movie where you won’t be able to understand the pain, confusion, regret, anger, doubt, fear, and dread he is feeling whenever the camera cuts to his face. Surprisingly enough, I was this close to crying upon seeing his crumble from the inside while hallucinating about his dead daughter. He is so fu*king convincing in that film that more and more horror directors should start making horror movies just so that Kaushal can star in them and show the world what a capable actor he is.

FINAL VERDICT.

In _The Haunted Ship_, Singh pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock (one of the greatest horror directors of all time) with the dolly zoom, pays homage to _Poltergeist_, and makes a sly reference to _The Shining_ (my favourite horror movie of all time). The filmmakers also thank Ram Gopal Verma for some reason, making me think that somewhere down the line Urmila Matondkar (who was in _Bhoot_) is going to show up in some shape or form alongside Kaushal. I don’t know how much of all that is intentional, but it is there and hence deserves some credit. The movie also deserves some more credit for doing away with so many traditional Indian horror tropes and for featuring a beautiful performance from Vicky Kaushal. And if Dharma Productions wants to turn this into a franchise, I’d beg them to do away with the criticisms I’ve mentioned above and just go crazy with their ideas.

Don’t hold back!

Also, here’s a suggestion. Watch _Bhoot: Part One – The Haunted Ship_ with your friends and family or just a packed theatre. I swear you’re going to enjoy it way more than if you choose to watch it

alone.
