Home Sweet Home! After a harrowing journey through eerily deserted airports, it's lovely to be back home in Perth. :-) Here's a view from the plane window, showing the Swan River which runs through the city, plus the (few!) skyscrapers of downtown Perth just visible on the horizon, left. And these cute little marsupials are quokkas - one of the most adorable animals you'll ever meet! They're only found on small islands off the coast of Western Australia and because there are no natural predators, are completely fearless. They will even pose for selfies with you! :D They've become famous as "the world's happiest animal" as they always look like they're smiling. If you ever have the chance to come to Perth, make sure you visit Rottnest Island to seethem! :-)

Are there any UK rose gardeners here? Can you help with a book research question, please? I want to feature a very thorny rose shrub in my latest English Cottage Garden mystery - I was hoping to use 'Rosa multiflora' but I'm confused because of conflicting descriptions on US vs UK sites: American references say this rose is notorious for having lots of vicious thorns but English sites don't mention this - in fact, some say it's " almost thornless"! Can the same rose be so different across the pond?? Can anyone confirm if Rosa multiflora IS very thorny in the UK? If it's not, are there any other really prickly candidates you would suggest? (I was thinking of the rambler, Rosa 'Mermaid' as an alternative. Apparently, it has barbed thorns and is a pruninghazard...!)
*I know most roses are fairly prickly but I want one with vicious barbs that can do serious damage! ;-) ) Thank you! ... See MoreSee Less* Likes: 25

Cindy Lane Art A lot of the Old/vintage varieties (especially the David Austin ones) have sliced and diced me over the years! Just google Heritage roses and you'll find heaps.4 weeks ago 1
Amanda PetersAlot of the elegant new roses have the thorns breed out of them, so you need to go for an old variety. The thorniest rose in my garden is actually a dog rose but I'm pretty sure that's not whatyou are going for!

Julia RoebuckI know nothing about roses but my green-gingered husband suggests a Dog Rose (Rosa Canina) as an alternative thorny one. We have a Yorkshire rose in our garden which is both shrubby and thorny.4 weeks ago 1

H.Y. Hanna - Author Thanks, everybody! Yes, I had been looking at species roses and OGR's as I'm familiar with quite a few but what threw me was the differing reports (in UK vs US) for the same rose... so I wanted to make sure that I picked one which WAS definitely thorny in Britain! :P I know from my own experience growing roses that the same rose can be wildly different sometimes in different countries/climates. e.g. I love David Austin roses but the descriptions on their website are completely inaccurate for Australian conditions - the same roses that are described as "compact" and only growing to 3 feet in England grow to over 6 feet with massive octopus arms in Oz!4 weeks ago 1

Dorise SweetnamPlant thorn synovitis is a serious injury even from a small thorn injury. Yet i apprentice the dramatic licence offered by “the most vicious rose thorn”. There is also a fungal disease disseminated by roses that can enter through any opening in skin called Sporotrichosis, or “rose gardener disease”. I cant find the article presently, but as an undergrad i recall reading that thorn size and quantity may vary within the exact same species depending on environmental factors. I will keep looking for the article, but that journal was from back in the 1980’s. Not sure that any of this helps you specifically. Here is an interesting summary as it is considered an invasive spp in many areas of Canada. Success to you, the plot clue sounds intriguing. So very happy for you, and your family, that your mom is healing so well https://www.ontarioinvasiveplants.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/OIPC_BMP_Multiflora_Mar122018_D5_WEB-1.pdf4 weeks ago 1
Liz Gillhamnot a british native, multiflora is a species that has multiple floers on one stem. Started from wild roses from Asia. there are many differnt types within the species, some are thorny some are not. they are ramblers & grow fast.4 weeks ago

Margie WrightThere's one called Barbara Bush, and I kid you not, the thorns are unbelievable. My dog backed into it and it was like porcupine quills. I couldnt get the thorns out of his booty and he actually tore his flesh out yo remedy his misery. He then dug up every rose bush I had regardless. I used to hear him growl at roses!4 weeks ago 1

Meanwhile back home, my husband tells me that Muesli has been helping to look after my garden...! ;-) In case anyone is wondering, those beautiful pink flowers are called 'Lisianthus' - also known as Prairie Gentian or Texas Bluebell, as they originated in the southern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and South America. I killed dozens of Lisianthus plants before I figured out that they like to remain dry - their roots rot really easily, so you have to water VERY sparingly! :p They're gorgeous and come in an array of beautiful pastel shades. Here are some blooms I picked back in December last year (the start of our summer) for a vase in the house... don't they look remarkably like roses? No fragrance, though! ... See MoreSee LessView

For all those who have been asking, my mother is continuing to recover well from her spinal surgery. :-) It was lovely seeing her delight when she was allowed out for her first walk and it was very interesting for me accompanying her to rehabilitation classes to help rebuild her core muscles and strengthen her spine again... It made me realise how bad MY posture is, especially as I spend hours every day hunched over my computer, writing books! :P Actually, the hardest thing for my mother was not being allowed to shower for the 2 weeks following her operation, in order to keep the surgical wound dry... Made me realise we take so many simple things for granted and how precious they become when we can't have them! :P ... See MoreSee LessView

Thank you so much everybody for your lovely messages & good wishes for my mother's operation! <3 I'm writing from Taiwan and I'm delighted to report that she has come through the spinal surgery smoothly and has been discharged from hospital. She is now recovering at home, although she will have limited mobility for the next few weeks. It's probably a blessing that she can't go out much as things are still worrying re: the coronavirus outbreak (although there is good control in Taiwan) - so it's just as well that we're not going out to crowded public places! We're taking all the necessary precautions and hoping to stay healthy and safe until the epidemic is over. Thanks again for all your prayers, caring and concern - I can't tell you how touched I am!! I hope you are all staying safe and healthy too during these difficult times. ~ Hsin-Yi ... See MoreSee LessView

Hi everybody - I have a bit of bad news. I had to make an urgent trip to Taiwan a week ago as my mother - who turns 70 this year - had a health scare, with debilitating leg pain and dangerously high blood pressure (she ended up in the ER with a blood pressure of 200, dizziness, shortness of breath & chest pain). It turns out that she needs to have a spinal operation and the earliest date they can fit her in is early Feb. I flew back to Australia earlier this week and am back home now, but I will need to return to Taiwan in early Feb to look after her for the few weeks post-surgery. (Bit of a worrying time to be going to Asia and hanging around hospital environments, given the coronavirus epidemic in nearby China!! :P ) As you can imagine, this has completely disrupted things work-wise. I'd been hoping to finish writing the next book in my English Cottage Garden Mysteries: TROWEL AND ERROR (Book 4) in Jan, ready for release in Feb... but I've only completed 2/3rds of the story so far. I'm home for a week before I have to leave again and I doubt I'll be able to do much writing while I'm away. So unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to return to the manuscript until after my mother recovers and I can come home. I will try my best to finish the book in whatever free time I can find, but I really need quiet & isolation to focus on writing and it's difficult with so many things going on. So I don't think the book will be ready for release until March or maybe even early April... and it also means that the next Bewitched by Chocolate mysteries (Book 7) will be delayed until the second half of the year. I'm sorry about the delays but I hope you will understand. Due to all the travelling and being off-line, I also won't be checking email or social media as regularly, so forgive me if I'm unable to respond to your messages. ~ Hsin-Yi ... See MoreSee LessView
