HUMMINGBIRDS 101
Hummingbirds are tiny birds weighing 2 to 20 grams (.06-.60 ounces). They feed on nectar and insects, as well as tiny spiders. They have long and slender beaks and extensible tongues. They always have 10 primary feathers, 6 or 7 secondaries, nearly always 10 rectrices (tailfeathers), and an
PREDATORS OF HUMMINGBIRDS Cats, both domestic and feral, are probably the most common predators of non-nested hummingbirds. Reports to the Society come in regularly, for example, of people whose cats carry a hummingbird in their mouth--sometimes dead, sometimes not. Reports of tailless hummingbirds are less likely to indicate a hummingbird in molt than one that narrowly escaped being caught by a cat. ENDANGERED - HUMMINGBIRD SOCIETY Hummingbirds are the world's second largest family of birds with an estimated 338 species. Despite the fact that they are found only in the New World (North, South, and Central America; and islands of the Caribbean), they are a familiar subject around the globe. 04/25/20 THE 2020 SEDONA HUMMINGBIRD FESTIVAL IS CANCELLED. The Board of Directors has decided that the best course of action, in view of the uncertainties surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, is to cancel our Sedona Hummingbird Festival this year. The possible financial impact could also put the future of the Society in jeopardy. This was not an easy decision, but the health of our attendees, members, volunteers and staff that would be participating in the Festival are our first priority. The financial risk to the Society is also unknowable and potentially catastrophic. We hope you will plan to attend our 2021 Sedona Hummingbird Festival, scheduled for July 30 – August 1! Tickets will go on sale April 1 ofnext year.
04/25/20 OUR MATCHING FUND CAMPAIGN HAS EXCITING NEWS! The maximum total available for matching HAS BEEN RAISED FROM $6,000 TO $11,000, thanks to additional donors who generously added to the pool. Because of this, THE CUTOFF DATE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MAY 25; all qualifying donations will be matched 1-for-1! At present, the total qualifying funds are $3,650 for the first 10 days of the Campaign. We still need lots of help to utilize the full$11,000 match!
04/16/20 Our e-newsletter, "The Hummingbird Messenger," is now posted on our website! Click here . 04/11/20 SOME EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD NEWS: Your qualifying donations between now and May 15 will be matched, 1-for-1! For details, click here . 03/26/20 Ticket sales update: Since the Festival was cancelled as of 4/25, there will be no advance ticket sales this year. _______________________ _We Love Hummingbirds!_ Everyone does, or at least it seems that way. And it is easy to understand, because no other bird or animal has the charisma of ahummingbird:
*
Flashing, colorful beauty!*
Unmatched flight abilities, including hovering and flying backwards*
Unafraid to approach us and enter into relationship with us On the one hand, hummingbirds appear tiny and delicate: the average hummer weights only about 1/10 ounce (3-4 grams). Yet they are hardy and resilient: some species annually migrate as much as 3,000 mileseach way.
Even though resilient, they do face problems: 39 of the 365 known species have been designated at risk of extinction by BirdLifeInternational
.
In deciding how the Hummingbird Society could help the plight of tiny, endangered hummingbirds, we followed the words of the Senegalese environmentalist Baba Dioum, who is quoted as saying: _"IN THE END, WE WILL CONSERVE ONLY WHAT WE LOVE._ _WE WILL LOVE ONLY WHAT WE UNDERSTAND._ _WE WILL UNDERSTAND ONLY WHAT WE ARE TAUGHT."_ The Hummingbird Society was created in 1996 as a nonprofit* organization to help people understand and appreciate hummingbirds and to provide a channel to help save the ones that are endangered. That sums it up well for the purpose of the Hummingbird Society's mission: teach people about hummingbirds, and they will understand them better; and from that understanding and caring, will come support for theirprotection.
You can do your part by becoming a member of the Hummingbird Society, for only $40 (tax-deductible, too), or by makinga donation.
