The Virginia Zoo provides donations to nonprofit organizations sponsoring fundraising activities to benefit their members or target audiences. The Virginia Zoo’s closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic has made a significant financial impact on the Zoo. Due to this, we are unable to offer community donations on admission at this time. REOPEN - VIRGINIA ZOO To ensure the safety of our visitors, staff and animals, the Virginia Zoo is following these procedures until further notice: A limited number of entries allowed per day at timed intervals. No-contact entry with online, advanced reservations. Sanitizer stations located throughout the park, including food locations. Increased cleaning

procedures.

ZOO HISTORY

A Rich History Since 1900 (or 1901, depending on who you ask). Lafayette Park began its acquisition of animals in 1900, but did not officially become the Lafayette Zoological Park until 1901 when deemed a city park by the City of Norfolk. Today, the Virginia Zoo spans 53 acres adjacent to Lafayette Park and is bordered by the Lafayette

River.

CONSERVATION YOUTH TEAM The Virginia Zoo’s Conservation Youth Team (CYT) program is a high school volunteer and youth development program that was created for teens who want to learn more about animals and conservation, earn community service hours, and spend their summer at the Virginia Zoo! NATURE AND ECO KAYAK TOUR This tour runs for 90 minutes and will cover approximately 3-3.5 miles of kayaking at a leisurely pace. All experience levels are welcome; however, please be prepared to paddle the majority of the time on the water. All tours benefit the Virginia Zoo’s Act for Wildlife Fund, which supports conservation activities locally and worldwide. NIGERIAN DWARF GOATS Nigerian Dwarf Goats. Found In: Originally from West Africa, but after many years of breeding can now be found all over the world, including Europe, Asia, Australia, and in the North and South Americas. Size: Goats can be 16 – 24 inches long and weigh 60 – 80 pounds. Facts: A goat has rectangular pupils so it can see danger coming from behind. ZOO JOBS - VIRGINIA ZOO The Virginia Zoological Park. VZP staff maintains all animal exhibits and provides animal care and husbandry, maintains the lush grounds and gardens, oversees most building repair and maintenance, and manages the Zoo’s ticket booth.
