HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM At a meeting in January 1886, the newly formed Westerbotten County Archaeological Society decided “to establish a museum in Umeå as a storage space for archaeological artefacts”. This was located in the Ullbergska property, roughly where the current Thor block stands, with a magnificent façade facing Storgatan. However, much of what was collected was destroyed VÄSTERBOTTENS MUSEUM UTSTÄLLNINGAR ARKIV The exhibition provides a narrative of the daily lives and the history of the Roma. It is about 500 years of living as outsiders, living in the open, activism, joy, traditions, music and hope for the future. It is also about migration from India to Europe, about language andcultural heritage.

Perhaps Sune Jonsson quite simply thought more about this than many other photographers. VÄSTERBOTTENS MUSEUM COLLABORATION WITH THE ROSENSTRÖM During 2020, the Gunborg and Sten Rosenström Foundation for Supporting Culture from Norrland will focus its attention on previous prize winners. This has given Västerbottens Museum the opportunity to involve creators in museum activities throughout the spring. Mia Rogersdotter has followed the river, north to VÄSTERBOTTENS MUSEUM SOUNDS AT THE OPEN AIR MUSEUM During 2020, the Gunborg and Sten Rosenström Foundation for Supporting Culture from Norrland will focus its attention on previous prize winners. This has given Västerbottens Museum the opportunity to involve creators in museum activities throughout the spring. Musicians Sara Ajnnak, Birgit Lindberg and Anton Teljebäck were invited to the museum to create their own sound-based VÄSTERBOTTENS MUSEUM RESIDENCY JURY Residency jury. Hannah Modigh is educated at the Nordic School of Photography and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. She has published five books, of which Hillbilly Heroin, Honey won The Swedish PhotoBook Award in 2010. Her photography focuses on the relationship between place and human, and she conveys emotions with a pictorial language where things cut below the surface, where great importance VÄSTERBOTTENS MUSEUM USING LANDSCAPES Fanny Carinasdotter Anja Örn Tomas Örn Using Landscapes is an ongoing project that started in 2016 and is a collaboration between Fanny Carinasdotter, Anja Örn and Tomas Örn. The artists take inspiration from the Boliden’s Aitik open-pit copper mine located just outside of Gällivare and explore the aesthetics of extraction.
