Friday, January 7 - Saturday, January 8, 2022 2021/22 SEASON PREVIEW: THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA RETURNS The Philadelphia Orchestra’s rich history with UMS dates back more than a century, first performing in Hill Auditorium in 1913 and serving as the orchestra-in-residence for the Ann Arbor May Festival for nearly 50 years from 1936-1984. BENJAMIN GROSVENOR, PIANO Benjamin Grosvenor makes his UMS debut two years after it was originally scheduled and then postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Grosvenor first came to prominence as the winner of the Keyboard Final of the 2004 BBC Young Musician Competition when he was just 11. No longer a prodigy at age 28, he leaves ecstatic audiences in his wake wherever he performs, with playing reminiscent ofHILL AUDITORIUM
Hill Auditorium was built by noted architectural firm Kahn and Wilby. Completed in 1913, the renowned concert hall was inaugurated at the 20th Ann Arbor May Festival, and has continued to be the site of thousands of concerts, featuring everyone from Leonard Bernstein and JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bring their fun, one-of-a-kind holiday extravaganza to brighten up the holiday season. They celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with seasonal confections that put the heart and soul into the holidays. Created by circus performers Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone, in collaboration with kinetic sculptor Daniel Wurtzel, Air Play was devised through ABOUT – UMS – UNIVERSITY MUSICAL SOCIETY With a program steeped in music, dance, and theater, UMS contributes to a vibrant cultural community by presenting approximately 60-75 performances and over 100 free educational activities each season. Five days later, when Matt passed away, the world was watching.
