Southwest Virginia Community College will be offering a course in Mountain Biking. The RPK 150 course of Mountain Biking will take students to two different Rails-to-Trails locations. The first ride will be a section of the Creeper Trail from the Whitetop Station to the Damascus Town Park. The second ride will be a section of the New River Trail from Foster Falls to the Buck Dam and then back to Foster Falls. In this course, the students will learn about bike setup, trip planning, basic riding techniques, basic bike maintenance, and trail etiquette. The students also will learn about the history of the Creeper Trail, the New River Trail, and other locations on the trails, such as the Shot Tower or the station museums. During the two different trips, the group will ride an estimated total of 40 miles of scenic trails. Classroom session is at 6:00pm on 7/23. Creeper Trail trip is on 7/24. Southwest Virginia Community College will be offering a course in Kayaking. The RPK 131 course of Kayaking will take students to two different locations from a lake adventure and a slow-moving river where kayaking can be enjoyed and learned, like South Holston Lake and North Fork of the Holston. During a class session, the course will help everyone learn water classifications, safety, and destination planning. Students in the class will learn various paddling techniques in a lake adventure including forward stroke, sweep stroke, draw stroke, and reverse forward stroke. On slow moving rivers, the students will learn rescue techniques, entering eddies and peel out of eddies, ferrying, and how to read the river signs to have an enjoyable paddle.
