MEDIATIONS | EXHIBITIONS Mediations (1978–1982) is based on Meiselas’s initial experience during the popular insurrection in Nicaragua. The selection process of her images for the publication Nicaragua: June 1978–July 1979 and the use of the same photographs by the mass media left her with many questions about how images are used in different contexts. MISSING WOMEN OF JUAREZ (1998) Maria is 17 years old and disappeared just over one week ago, on April 16, 1998. Twenty-one-year-old Guillermina, the eldest of five sisters, holds her mother, Paola, with 16-year-old Guadalupe (at left) and 19-year-old Juana (back, right) look on. Amnesty Now, Spring 2003. Population: 2.2 million Government: Ruled by the Somoza family since 1936 Land: 5% of population owned 58% of arable land; Somoza family owned 23% Wealth: 50% of population had an average annual income of $90 Housing: 80% without running water, 59% without electricity, 47% without sanitary facilities, 69% with dirt floors Illiteracy: 57% nationwide, but 80% average in rural VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA Then I discovered the "Volunteers of America." It was the organization behind the homeless men on Fifth Avenue who dressed as Santa Claus to collect money for the shelter in my neighborhood. Most people on the sidewalks just walked past them, some made contributions, but others had their children balance on Santa's knees, never of course WOMEN IN THE US ARMY (1975-1976) Although women have been in the US Army since 1942, recent changes in manpower requirements have profoundly altered their role. In 1972 before 'all-volunteer' began, the number of women in the Army was 13,300. In mid-1975 it was approximately 40,500 and it's expected to now be approaching 50,000, bringing their total participation to 7% (A
