AT-HOME STEM ACTIVITIES: TIDES AND MOON PHASES Ocean tides are one of the most predictable natural phenomena. One cycle of tides occurs about every 25 hours, and the main cause of the rise and fall of the waves is the gravitational pull of the Moon. Even though the Moon is so small compared to Earth—the Moon has about 1/100th of Earth’s mass—it still has enough gravity to affect the AT-HOME STEM ACTIVITIES: ICE CUBE RACE Practical note: At first we used a piece of plain white printer paper to set up the white square on our experimental grid. We were surprised to see, at the 10-minute check-in, that the ice cube on the white paper was melting more quickly than the ice on some of the colors. It should still show ridges (high points) and valleys (low points). Choose one of the ridges. Gently run your fingertip along its surface and think about its shape. MCAULIFFE-SHEPARD BLOG The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is using this week to bring awareness to light pollution and the various effects that it has on humans and the natural world. Each day of this week we will be uploading a new blog post with different activities, story times, or infographics that explore a different aspect of light pollution. AT-HOME STEM ACTIVITIES: EARTH, MOON, AND SUN The largest circle will be your SUN, the medium circle is the EARTH, and the smallest circle is the MOON. 2) Color & cut out your Earth, Moon, and Sun, and cut two additional strips of plain paper or cardstock.
