SENSORY PROCESSING
Sensory processing refers to the mechanisms of how we feel. It is how we use what we sense to make sense of the world around us, and it underpins every aspect of human functioning. Everyone processes sensation. The sensory messages we receive from our bodies and the world around us are responded to in every single thing we do in life.YOUR 8 SENSES
8. Interoception. A. The five basic sensory systems: 1. Visual System. The visual system is responsible for seeing. The primary visual area of the brain is the occipital lobe (see figure). Projections are received from the retina (through the thalamus) where different types of information are encoded.SUBTYPES OF SPD
The symptoms of SPD vary greatly depending upon the sense that is affected, how that sense is affected, and the severity of the condition. SPD may occur in each sensory system: Visual, Auditory, Tactile, Smell, Taste, Vestibular, Proprioception, Interoception AND symptoms may vary depending on subtype. That is why SPD is sodifficult to

Differences in sensory processing can be described as symptoms of sensory processing disorder. These checklists ask questions about manifestations of differences in sensory processing that are considered outside the 'typical range'. Many of the symptoms listed in the following categories are common to that particular age group. Where more than a few symptoms are found in a child, we recommend SUMMER 2021 YOUTH PROGRAMS AND CAMPS At STAR we offer a variety of youth programs, ongoing groups, and summer camps, both online and in-person, that support your child and family with daily activities that focus on the skills they need to succeed. Our programs involve movement, language development, sensory and social skills for ages 3-17. Learn more about our summerprogramming below.
VIRTUAL SUMMIT: SENSORY PROCESSING IN ADHD Join us as we explore dynamic evidence-based practice, delve into current research, and discuss sensory health and ADHD. Attendees will explore the profound influence sensory processing differences have on development and function, enabling them to effectively look beyond "behaviors" and identify underlying mechanisms. Strategies for home, school, and the community will be provided. INTEGRATED LISTENING THERAPY We use Integrated Listening Systems (iLs) Therapy to improve children’s auditory processing abilities. We evaluate auditory processing abilities using the SCAN-3 and the Test of Auditory Processing with children over the age of 5. Some children receive iLs during Occupational Therapy, but not every child is appropriate for iLs. For some children we recommend iLs as a home program.SPD IN ADULTS

Sensory Processing Health and Wellness Sensory processing refers to the mechanisms of _how_ we feel. It is how we use what we sense to make sense of the world around us, and it underpins every aspect of human functioning. Everyone processes sensation. The sensory messages we receive from our bodies and the world around us are responded to in every single thing we do in life. In each instance our sensory systems provide vital information that we use to be successful. Sensory processing and integration is foundational to healthy development, function, participation, learning and psychological well-being. Our ability to process sensory data does not usually require conscious thought or cognitive effort. It provides emotional stability, our sense of safety, a platform for social interaction, sense of self, well-being, satisfaction and/or accomplishment. Sensory processing influences every area of living including our preferences in diet, exercise, relationships, career, and our hobbies.LEARN MORE
