A Cost-of-Living-Adjustment (COLA) is an automatic increase to a pension that eligible NYSTRS retirees and beneficiaries receive each September. By law, NYSTRS retirees receive a 1% to 3% COLA annually, based on 50% of the increase in the Consumer Price Index. The COLA is applied to the first $18,000 of the maximum pension benefit. A Cost-of-Living-Adjustment (COLA) is an automatic increase to a pension that eligible NYSTRS retirees and beneficiaries receive each September. INVESTMENTS
NYSTRS is one of the most secure and well-funded public pension plans in the country. Our 10-year and 30-year rates of investment returns, net of fees, were 9.6% and 8.6%, respectively, as of the fiscal year ended June 30, 2020. SERVICE RETIREMENT BENEFITS Eligibility. Tier 1 members may retire at any age with 35 years of service, or at age 55 with five or more years of service. Retirement may also occur at age 55 with less than five years of NYS service, if two years of NYS service are rendered after their current membership date and since they reached age 53. Requests for a print version should be made via our Hotline at (800) 782-0289. 2020 EMPLOYER CONTRIBUTION RATE (ECR) The current rates are as follows: The ECR applicable to 2020-21 school year salaries is 9.53%. The payments associated with this rate will be collected in the fall of 2021. See Administrative Bulletin 2020-6 for more information. The estimated ECR applicable to 2021-22 school year salaries is 9.80%. A Cost-of-Living-Adjustment (COLA) is an automatic increase to a pension that eligible NYSTRS retirees and beneficiaries receive each September. By law, NYSTRS retirees receive a 1% to 3% COLA annually, based on 50% of the increase in the Consumer Price Index. The COLA is applied to the first $18,000 of the maximum pension benefit.
