LAKE HARRIET PARK
With another $15,000 loaned to the park board by an association of Minneapolis retailers, the park board built a new pavilion, also designed by Harry Jones, in 1904. The new pavilion extended out over the water and its roof provided an open-air concert venue. Lake Harriet was known as much more than a boating and concert lake, however.

Morris Park was the subject of political wrangling in 1979. The park board added an expansion of the Morris Park shelter, at a cost of $467,000, to its 1980 bond program request. Phelps was a park commissioner from 1905 until he died in 1923, which made him the longest serving park commissioner in history at the time, surpassing William Folwell by several months. He was president of the park board in 1912 and 1913. ------------------------- MPRB Comprehensive Plan: Parks for All Help set priorities and policy direction for the next decade of Minneapolis Parks! Minnehaha Creek Master Plan A new plan is being created right now for parkland along Minnehaha Creek from Minnehaha Regional Park to the western Minneapolis border. Southwest Minneapolis Parks Plan A new cohesive set of plans is being created right now for more than 40 Southwest Minneapolis neighborhood park properties.

Established in 1883, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) oversees a renowned urban park system spanning 6,809 acres of parkland and water. Featured among its 180 park properties are 55 miles of parkways, 102 miles of Grand Rounds biking and walking paths, 22 lakes, 12 formal gardens, seven golf courses and 49 recreation centers. Altogether, MPRB properties receive about 23 million visits annually.
