Having this more open canopy also allows more air movement which helps with pest and disease issues. The overall effect of the pruning on the tree is a dwarfing similar to what you see in bonsai.

This is when I turned to our Director of Horticulture, Rick Pudwell, life-time bird enthusiast, for help.
