According to a legend that emerged in the 12th century, the two sons of Clovis II revolted against their father after he had set off on a crusade. Condemned for their rebellion, they were punished in accordance with their sin, and were deprived of their vital force. The operation consisted of ‘revmoing their life force’ them by burning the tendons of their muscles so that they IN A CAFÉ - MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS DE ROUEN Caillebotte presented this café scene, typical of modern life, at the fifth Impressionist Exhibition.A life-sized male figure dominates the canvas. Caillebotte painted this subject several times and depicts him here looking a bit dishevelled in baggy clothes, hands in his pockets and with the vague look of a disillusioned regular on his face. He appears cut off from his surroundings, standing INTERIOR OF ROSSLYN CHAPEL Dating from 1824, this painting is one Daguerre’s masterpieces. Few such works by this artist remain, his contribution to the invention of photography almost entirely eclipsing his career as a painter. This view of the internal architecture of a chapel with its striking chiaroscuro is contemporaneous with a large-scale version, without figures, that was presented in Paris in RUE SAINT-DENIS, CELEBRATION OF 30TH JUNE 1878 The subject of this painting is the first official national celebration to take place following the defeat of Napoleon III in 1870, when the conservatives regained power. The festivities marked the 1878 Universal Exhibition and also heralded the advent of the French Third Republic, established several months later. Social commentators of the day remarked on the enthusiasm evident on this ELOA, SISTER OF THE ANGELS These verses were written by Alfred de Vigny in 1823 as part of his poem Eloa or The Sister of the Angels, which was Joseph-Michel Pollet’s inspiration for this bronze sculpture dating from 1862. Eloa, angel of compassion, born of the tears shed by Christ upon the death of his friend Lazarus, is seduced by Satan, who lures her with

his own tears.

YOUNG WOMAN ON HER DEATH BED This painting, in excellent condition, is exceptional in a number of ways. The first is in the very originality of its subject: the portrait of a dead young woman. A short text in Latin found in the top right-hand corner on the back of the picture even specifies that it is the portrait of a young woman who died at 25 years of age, and that is was painted two hours after her death in 1621.
