Our research is transforming the ESTABLISHING ROUTINES AT HOME HELPING YOUR CHILD COMMUNICATE Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) learn best during everyday activities and interactions, such as riding in the car to school, eating a family meal or going to the grocery store.. During daily activities, parents can provide language-learning opportunities and promote social communication skills. In fact, research has shown that when parents learn specific strategies to promote CRISIS PREVENTION PROGRAM The Crisis Prevention Program was developed at Marcus Autism Center by a team of licensed psychologists, physical therapists, behavior and mental health experts, and behavior analysts who work with children and adolescents who engage in severe problem behavior. The system was developed out of high demand for effective and safe crisis management SETTING GOALS AND TRACKING IMPROVEMENTS Set a goal that you know can be completed. Make it observable. Create a goal that can be measured, so you can track your child’s progress. Example of an observable goal: John will complete his morning routine independently without problem behavior before the school bus arrives. Example of a non-observable goal: John will happily complete his SUPPORTING ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT Active engagement happens when a child is able to interact, communicate and participate with others. It should be a goal for all children to experience active engagement, because that’s when they are able to learn and make connections with others. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have a harder time becoming

actively engaged

TIPS FOR FLYING WITH A CHILD WHO HAS AUTISM WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR CHILD ELOPES How to prevent elopement. Put locks on doors and windows that your child cannot unlock. If you use a key to lock windows and doors, ensure the key is easily accessible to adults in case of an emergency. Install alarms so you are alerted if your child has opened a door or window. Have your child wear a device that allows you to track her

location.

HOW TO USE NATURE TO NURTURE YOUR CHILD Follow these tips: If your child enjoys sensory experiences, put on rain boots and let your child jump in puddles. Use shovels, spoons or hands to scoop leaves or gather pine cones. If your child does not enjoy being messy or wet or tries to eat non-food items, avoid the above activities. It’s important to help kids with autism improve interactive play skills because play is a foundation for many learning opportunities. Michael Siller, PhD, received his doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to joining the faculty at Emory University in 2016, Dr. Siller held a position as associate professor of psychology at Hunter College of The City University of New HELPING KIDS WITH AUTISM MAKE FRIENDS An important part of making friends comes from having age-appropriate social skills, which many kids who have autism struggle with.
