FEDERAL PROGRAMS
Federal Land Conservation Programs The federal government is a vital source of funding for land and natural resource conservation in America — helping to save great parks and public lands, productive farms and ranches, vital wildlife habitat, healthy watersheds and more. Federal funding typically leverages contributions from state, local and private sources — enabling the protection of CONSERVATION OPTIONS The most common way to protect land is by “conservation easement.” A conservation easement (also known as a conservation restriction or conservation agreement) is a voluntary, legal agreement between a landowner and a land trust or government agency that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. CONSERVATION DEFENSE The land you save today is the land you will protect tomorrow — and every day after that, forever. Land trusts need to be ready to keep our promises to protect the land whenever it is threatened. So far, major legal challenges have been few and far between, but that’s changing. We expect to see more and more challenges to conservation lands.
