LAND TRUST ALLIANCE

Our community has an important role to play in the 30x30 goal, so we must rise to the challenge. The nation’s land trusts are ready and willing to help private landowners conserve their lands at this

ambitious scale.

FIND A LAND TRUST

Find a land trust near you. Land trusts are at work everywhere in America — from local grassroots groups to larger organizations with a regional, statewide, or national service area.

PUBLIC FUNDING

The Alliance has helped direct billions of dollars of federal funding to conservation and we help land trusts win state and local ballot

measures.

LAND TRUST STANDARDS AND PRACTICES

FEDERAL PROGRAMS

Federal Land Conservation Programs The federal government is a vital source of funding for land and natural resource conservation in America — helping to save great parks and public lands, productive farms and ranches, vital wildlife habitat, healthy watersheds and more. Federal funding typically leverages contributions from state, local and private sources — enabling the protection of CONSERVATION OPTIONS The most common way to protect land is by “conservation easement.” A conservation easement (also known as a conservation restriction or conservation agreement) is a voluntary, legal agreement between a landowner and a land trust or government agency that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. ADVANCED LEGAL ISSUES SYMPOSIA SERIES Looking to stay informed on conservation law? Interested in crafting practical legal solutions? Distinguished faculty will deliver up-to-date information impossible to find at any other single program on timely topics in conservation law. You will leave with practical tips you can put to use immediately upon your return to the office. LAND TRUST JOB BOARD Careers in Land Conservation Put your skills to work saving land! Explore careers at the Land Trust Alliance or pursue opportunities at land trusts across the country. The Land Trust Alliance strengthens land conservation throughout America by connecting land trusts, leading political advocacy and providing training and resources. Our staff works out of our headquarters in Washington D.C., as NRCS AND BUY-PROTECT-SELL Buy-Protect-Sell (BPS) is one of the most popular ways land trusts use NRCS funds to conserve land. Now that we have the Final Rule in place, land trusts need to be aware of how that will impact how they can use federal money to conserve farms and ranches. Join NRCS staff as they demystify the Final Rule and what it means for Buy-Protect-Sell

projects.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST RESILIENT LANDSCAPES INITIATIVE The Pacific Northwest Resilient Landscapes Initiative is a unique partnership between a national foundation, leading community foundations and the Land Trust Alliance, with the support of land trust state associations.

NEW YORK PROGRAM

2021 NY Land Conservation Conference. Closing Session: Pathways to Land Justice: Indigenous Tenure and Access Presented by: Neil Patterson, Curtis Berkey, Catherine Landis, Alexandra Page Handouts: Chat transcript On-demand recording. In this session, we look at Treaty provisions as they pertain to public agencies, land trusts and to all citizens of New York as part of a set of larger INCOME TAX INCENTIVES FOR LAND CONSERVATION For landowners, donating a conservation easement is a way to protect places they love. It’s also a major financial decision. When landowners donate a conservation easement, they give up part of the value of their property — often their family’s biggest asset. Tax incentives offset some of that loss in property value, making conservation a viable option for more landowners. WHAT WE DO | LAND TRUST ALLIANCE The Land Trust Alliance is the voice of the land trust community. As the national leader in policy, standards, education and training, we work passionately to support land trusts so they can save and secure more lands now and for future generations.

PUBLIC FUNDING

Public funding for land conservation brings an impressive return on investment. Our natural resources provide immense benefits — like clean water supplies, food security, flood control, outdoor recreation, public health, educational opportunities, and so much more. They also help to grow our economy. CONSERVATION OPTIONS The most common way to protect land is by “conservation easement.” A conservation easement (also known as a conservation restriction or conservation agreement) is a voluntary, legal agreement between a landowner and a land trust or government agency that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values.

FEDERAL PROGRAMS

Federal Land Conservation Programs The federal government is a vital source of funding for land and natural resource conservation in America — helping to save great parks and public lands, productive farms and ranches, vital wildlife habitat, healthy watersheds and more. Federal funding typically leverages contributions from state, local and private sources — enabling the protection of CONSERVATION DEFENSE Conservation Defense Fund. The Alliance is committed to making sure that land trusts win every precedent-setting case. Our Conservation Defense Fund provides backup for the legal battles that are most important for the land trust community to win. Individual land trusts must also prepare to meet the financial demands of conservation
