MEET DR. RAKESH CHAUDHARY MAY 30, 2021 - Dr. Rakesh Chaudhary was named physician in chief at Kaiser Medical Center in Santa Clara just days before the world imploded with COVID-19. “It seems so long ago, but also like yesterday,” says Dr. Chaudhary. “Several of us were talking about a virus that was coming our way and literally two days later our first case landed at the hospital here. Suddenly we were standing on the epicenter.” Santa Clara County had the first recorded US death from COVID. “I was worried about our community, our staff, our physicians, and I could see the fear in their eyes and I could hear the fear in their voices. And they just kept doing their work,” says Dr. Chaudhary.

Joint Venture’s Institute for Regional Studies released analysis that shows a small, two-tenths of a percentage point decline in the regional unemployment rate between March and April 2021. This decline represents an additional 2,600 employed throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. “Silicon Valley’s emergence from the crisis is getting more people back to work, but we have a long way to go to full employment and our progress is slow,” said Rachel Massaro, the Institute’s Director of Research. INSTITUTE RELEASE: Q1 2021 COMMERCIAL SPACE MAY 18, 2021 - Joint Venture’s Institute for Regional Studies released its Q1 2021 Silicon Valley Commercial Space report. The report notes that, one year into the pandemic, commercial leasing activity in Silicon Valley was slow, with fewer than 100 transactions in total. A handful of large commercial buildings were completed despite the slowdown of region development overall since the start of the pandemic, and an impressive 15 million square feet remains in-progress.
The quarter also marked the first notable rise in asking rents for industrial, lab, and R&D space. Vacancy rates for office and R&D space rose as well. In contrast, industrial space vacancy rates remained relatively stable.

JOINT VENTURE-BACKED EMISSIONS BILL MOVES FORWARD MAY 30, 2021 - Joint Venture recently endorsed Senate Bill (SB) 582 ,
which would establish the state’s first-ever statutory net-negative emissions goal, with a target date of 2035. The bill has passed the Senate Environmental Quality Committee and calls for a Just Resilience Plan to drive urgently needed investments in California’s most vulnerable communities. California must take courageous and bold action. Doing so will re-establish California as an international climate leader and galvanize equitable public and private investments in the solutions needed, from clean energy and mobility, to nature-based sequestration and community resilience. Using the Silicon Valley Recovery Roundtable and San Mateo County Recovery Initiative reports as a foundation, the initiative provides a backbone infrastructure for regional recovery efforts. Building Back Better engages in a spectrum of recovery efforts to identify opportunities to build pathways to an equitable future for all Silicon Valley residents. in July the endeavor will move backbone staffing to Joint Venture, which will support the operations of the network with a data-driven approach.
