In 1795, a small neatly-shaped stone dock was constructed at the mouth of the tiny stream flowing through Paradise Bottom to the Avon, to facilitate the unloading of freestone blocks for the building of William Miles’ Leigh Court. FRANK JUX Born on 11th July 1826 at Melksham, Wiltshire, John Fowler started work for his father, a wealthy Quaker corn merchant, when he left school, but at the age of 21 he moved to Middlesbrough where he obtained employment as an engineer with Gilkes, Wilson & Company. RUSSELL - IRSOCIETY.CO.UK RUSSELL was only the third Hunslet narrow gauge locomotive in this country to be fitted with Walschaerts valve gear. Another preserved engine, JACK (Hunslet number 684, gauge 1' 6"), built in 1898 for John Knowles & Co. Ltd., Woodville, Derbyshire, was the REDSTONE - IRSOCIETY.CO.UK REDSTONE. D. CLAYTON Unique among the many narrow gauge steam locomotives which have graced the hills and valleys of North Wales, REDSTONE, until recently, was without doubt the least known.
