HOUSTON SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES 2021–22 SEASON ARTISTS HOUSTON, TX (March 10, 2021) — The Houston Symphony is announcing guest artists and conductors appearing in the 2021–22 Season. Andrés Orozco-Estrada ’s final season as Music Director brings the Colombian-born, European conductor to Houston for five concert weeks, two of them featuring guest performances by pianists Emanuel Ax and

Yefim Bronfman.

On October 18, 20 and 21, legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman returns to the Houston Symphony for our Perlman Plays and Conducts program. In addition to performing Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Perlman will also conduct Mozart’s powerful Symphony No. 40 in G minor. A BATTLE WITH FATE: TCHAIKOVSKY’S SYMPHONY NO. 4 Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky’s patron and pen pal. Not long after the triumphant St. Petersburg premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony in 1878, the composer received a letter from a woman who had recently become one of the most important people in his life. Nadezhda von Meck was the immensely wealthy widow of one of Russia’s first railroad magnates, and was an ardent admirer of GREAT ESCAPE: TCHAIKOVSKY'S VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MAJOR Great Escape: Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. WOLFGANG'S DARK SIDE: MOZART'S SYMPHONY NO. 40 IN G MINOR Wolfgang’s Dark Side: Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor. On October 18, 20 and 21, legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman returns to the Houston Symphony for our Perlman Plays and Conducts program. In addition to performing Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Perlman will also conduct Mozart’s powerful Symphony No. 40 in G minor. POETRY IN MOTION: CHOPIN'S PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2 IN F MINOR The first is a Romantic melody of stark dynamic contrasts in F minor; the second, a more lyrical one introduced by the woodwinds in A flat major. When the piano enters, it reinterprets the first and second themes with ornamentation inspired by the expressive embellishments of bel canto opera singers.Even though the piano is technically a percussion instrument, Chopin was a master of creating
