HANDY CRAFTED ART
This is a hobbyist website for wood turning, it includes ideas and projects for all levels, bowls, pens, Easter eggs, spinning tops glasses and much more. There is a download page with easy to make jigsaws, an area covering shadow turning, and links to Instructables projects for wood work, 3D printing and Arduino projects. There is even an area for CNC enthusiasts, as well as details ofPROJECTS AND PLANS
All plans are free to download and use and only require a few tools and a bit of time to create. If you like these or any of the other content on this site then please use the comments or the contact page's to let me know as well clicking on the facebook like on the home page.. Thanks for looking BLOG - HAND CRAFTED ART Here's my latest turning, a Potpourri decorative bowl, with a pewter top. The outside shape starts off flat at the top with a slight O-G curve to a fairly large foot to which was added a decorative pattern, The top has a slight curve up towards the pewter top and the bowl itself is undercut to give it more space inside to put the potpourri. HAND TURNED SLIM LINE PENS AND PENCILS All pens are hand turned and polished, the shapes are a feature of the material being worked at the time, Although I do like to play with the shapes to make each pen individual. PENS (WOOD AND RESIN) Wonderful hand crafted items unique to me, for sale to youWHATS IT ALL ABOUT?
This bowl was inspired by work done by Mick Hanbury - I once saw one of his videos and thought to have a go. Its a small bowl in the center, the base has a small point which forces it to tilt towards the heavier side, thus displaying the cut out and pierced design at thetop.
HAND TURNED KEY RINGS Turned in different materials, the shapes are a feature of the material being worked at the time so each is a unique creation. The fittings are a Gold effect, some are fixed with a few being the double end type with detachable clip - good for securing to a bag but still being easy to find and remove for use. HAND TURNED SPINNERS Spinning tops are great, traditional toys for all ages, I know because I enjoy both playing with and creating them. Fun for old and you especially the ones with pull string the just seem to go for ever.HANDY CRAFTED ART

Bowls and plates are another great object to create on a lathe Taking time and effort to perfect the design. As with most of my turning designs I try not to plan it out two much (that is the turning part) and just start removing the wood to reveal the shape. That said If adding a design to the bowl it needs planning especially if its pyrography - one slip and you have to remove a layer of woodTURNED GLASS STEM
Making the stem for a glass is both tricky and rewarding. Trick because you have to take care to match the shape of the glass stem to the contour of the turned stem and rewarding because if you get if right the finished article is really beautiful.TURNING IDEAS
Working with wood - even only as a pass time is great fun - especially if you get to try new things. I have been playing with multi-access (off Centre) turning on and off for a bit. never quite getting it right, however this piece has turned out quite well - pouring wood is not something everyone can do but Ive managed it this time. 3D PRINTED / ARDUINO AND LINK-IT ONE A collection of guides available on Instructables.com all hand made by myself - most are Wood turning and DIY related a few came from personal interests in the Arduino application platform.WHATS IT ALL ABOUT?

This was the third i created. The first being little more than a single spindle turned in softwood. My second was a commission from my daughter as a present for a friend and was a two part wand in Mahogany and Beach. The wand seen here has three materials again Mahogany and beach with the addition of a resinLATHE SHADOW BOARD
A shadow board is simply a sheet of material held at 45 degrees to the bed of the lathe. A shape can then be drawn directly onto the board or a sheet of paper clipped to it to make it more reusable. To use them you draw your shape on the board or paper and then shine a light centrally on the front side of the wood being turned. This makes the shadow on the paper.POTPOURRI BOWL

SHADOW BOARD TEMPLATES This page has a few downloadable templates that can be use with this or any shadow board turning application. Feel free to download anduse.
USING THE SHADOW BOARD The shadow board technique is very simple to follow, You start off by turning a blank. The size is not important. For this egg I rounded the wood between centres and then added a spigot at one end to mount it in my chuck. Then I attached the shadow board "jig" to the lathe and inserted the actual board. This bowl was inspired by work done by Mick Hanbury - I once saw one of his videos and thought to have a go. Its a small bowl in the center, the base has a small point which forces it to tilt towards the heavier side, thus displaying the cut out and pierced design at thetop.
SHADOW BOARD TEMPLATES Shadow board templates. This page has a few downloadable templates that can be use with this or any shadow board turning application. Feel free to download and use. (images for this can be found here).BOWLS AND PLATES
Bowls and plates are another great object to create on a lathe Taking time and effort to perfect the design. As with most of my turning designs I try not to plan it out two much (that is the turning part) and just start removing the wood to reveal the shape. That said If adding a design to the bowl it needs planning especially if its pyrography - one slip and you have to remove a layer of woodPOTPOURRI BOWL

Working with wood - even only as a pass time is great fun - especially if you get to try new things. I have been playing with multi-access (off Centre) turning on and off for a bit. never quite getting it right, however this piece has turned out quite well - pouring wood is not something everyone can do but Ive managed it this time. 3D PRINTED / ARDUINO AND LINK-IT ONE A collection of guides available on Instructables.com all hand made by myself - most are Wood turning and DIY related a few came from personal interests in the Arduino application platform. HAND TURNED SPINNERS Spinning tops are great, traditional toys for all ages, I know because I enjoy both playing with and creating them. Fun for old and you especially the ones with pull string the just seem to go for ever.TURNED GLASS STEM
Making the stem for a glass is both tricky and rewarding. Trick because you have to take care to match the shape of the glass stem to the contour of the turned stem and rewarding because if you get if right the finished article is really beautiful. BUILDING THE SHADOW BOARD The shadow board is an aid to the wood turner, both experienced and beginner and helps to get repeatably accurate results during spindle turning. There are many ways to make a board and it can be as simple as laying a drawing on the bed of the lathe and shining a light down from the top. This is my design and is adapted from one use by Theo Haralampou in Australia. USING THE SHADOW BOARD The shadow board technique is very simple to follow, You start off by turning a blank. -------------------------WELCOME
This site is dedicated to my hobby, Woodwork, which at present means turning in materials such as wood, acrylic, and composite. I make all sorts of items from trinket boxes to pens, (key rings to follow). I have extended the site to include images and links to guides I have authored on the Instructables web community. SHADOW TURNING (MAKING A SHADOW BOARD AND DEMONSTRATION - LINKS BELOW) I created this Egg after watching a demonstration by Thoe Haralampou on Shadow board turning. I then designed my own lathe tool to securely hold the shadow board without the need for clamps that would get in the way. I also created a few templates, one of which being this egg. The decoration was added in pencil using a device called and egg-bot. I then burnt the design into the wood using a pyrography pen and painted it with iridescent colours. Details of the shadow board are on this site along with the templatesthat are
available for download. There is also a guide on turning the eggusing one
of the templates.
MAGAZINE ARTICLES
Christmas Carousel thats the title, and it was my article in this Decembers issue of the The Woodworker 2019.
Its a 90-95 % recycled piece. A platform suspended from a central pole using a gold colored chain. On the platform are 6 toys (2 trees, 2 snowmen and 2 -sort of huts) all brightly decorated using sharpie pens and coated with acrylic lacquer. It was a great project and the full description is available in the magazine along with other Christmasrelated activities.
SMOWMAN MONEYBOX
Just finished an article for the creation of a seasonal moneybox designed as a snowman. an the best part is that the woodworker magazine liked it enough to feature it in their November 2018 issue.
