The works of art, objects and archival documents on display have been assembled from the Foundling Hospital Collection, complemented by the Museum’s Collection which includes the Gerald Coke Handel Collection. NEW STUDY STUDIO TO OPEN Next month we will be transforming our Café into an exciting new space. The Study Studio will be a versatile room in which our visitors can browse catalogues from our recent exhibitions, schools can come together to discuss their visit, and groups can book the room for meetings, away days, private receptions and more, with AV facilitiesavailable.
GERALD COKE HANDEL COLLECTION Gerald Coke (1907-1990) was a businessman who created his collection over sixty years. It was bequeathed to the State in lieu of tax by his widow in 1995, and formally allocated to the Foundling Museum in 2008. WE ARE RE-OPENING (AT LAST) The Foundling Museum will be open from 10:00-17:00, and entry will be by pre-booked timed ticket only. *Please note. Should restrictions regarding opening change, in line with government guidance, all tickets will be fully refunded. LEARNING & ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES Enjoy a fun day out at the Foundling Museum. The Foundling Hospital Research Forum is open to all those studying the Foundling Hospital Collection and archives in depth, with an aim to facilitate the sharing of knowledge. LEARN ABOUT THE FOUNDLING HOSPITAL The Foundling Hospital, which continues today as the children’s charity Coram, was established in 1739 by the philanthropist Thomas Coram to care for babies at risk of abandonment. A seaman, a composer and painter, and the moving story of the charity they started 270 years ago. It is a recipe of art and care, which still looks afterkids today.

Foundlings and the Foundling Hospital. ‘Foundling’ is an historic term applied to children, usually babies, that have been abandoned by parents and discovered and cared for by others. Abandoned children were not unusual in the eighteenth century when the Foundling Hospital was established. Unlike mainland Europe where Catholic-run BED FROM THE FOUNDLING HOSPITAL, POSSIBLY NINETEENTH This bed came from the Berkhamsted site, although it may have belonged to the Hospital from before then. Its length and height appear to have been reduced at some point in the twentieth century. The photograph behind it shows rows of identical beds in a dormitory at the Foundling Hospital in Redhill, Surrey. It was temporarily based in a school ORIGINS OF THE COLLECTION Origins of the Collections. The Foundling Museum opened its doors to the public in 2004. The works of art, objects and archival documents on display have been assembled from the Foundling Hospital Collection, complemented by the Museum’s Collection which includes the Gerald Coke Handel Collection. In 1741 when the Hospital first opened its doors, mothers were asked to ‘affix on each child some particular writing, or other distinguishing mark or token, so that the children may be known thereafter if necessary’. Since babies were renamed on admission, a system had to be created whereby a FOCUSING ON FOUND DROWNED As The Fallen Woman enters into its final weeks, Director Caro Howell looks at one of the most striking pictures in the show: Found Drowned by G F Watts, painted in 1849-50 and on loan from the Watts Gallery..
