THE FUTURE OF IN-VEHICLE INFOTAINMENT Jens Kahrweg introduces the four technologies needed to power in-vehicle infotainment systems of the future. Since the first ever car, the engineering and manufacturing industries have strived to improve everything from engines to designs. WILL 2021 BE THE YEAR DRIVERLESS CARS REALLY HELP THE UK politician Phillip Hammond has stated that the law will allow for driverless cars to be in use on roads around the country from 2021, for use under the guidance of a qualified driver. A FIRE-SAFE FUTURE FOR THE POWER GENERATION INDUSTRY James Mountain explains how the power generation industry can keep the fires out and the lights on. The UK’s reliance on renewable energy sources for electricity is increasing, and consistency in our constrained power generation landscape is a growing concern. SUCCESS FOR SELLAFIELD’S NUCLEAR WASTE CONTAINER A novel fixture for machining nuclear waste containers. Decommissioning legacy nuclear waste silos on the former UK power generating site at Sellafield requires a large number of bins to be machined to close geometrical tolerances to ensure they can be stackedsafely.
NEW STANDARDS FOR OIL-IN-WATER ANALYSERS Joint Industry Project launched to establish new global standards and practices for online oil-in-water analysers at remote locations. TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory (NEL) has launched a Joint Industry Project (JIP) that will support regulatory authorities and industry to establish new standards and practices for the use of online oil-in-water analysers at remote locations. TURNING THE TIDE WITH VANADIUM FLOW BATTERIES Matt Harper reveals how vanadium flow batteries unlock the potential of tidal power and green hydrogen. Generating clean energy from the rise and fall of the tide has captured the imagination of engineersfor decades.
LEAK AND FLOW TEST SYSTEM Chell Instruments has announced its latest development, the PIT 100, a self-contained automated leak and flow test system.. Pipe-work integrity (known as the PIT 100) performs a number of tests to determine the integrity of pressurised pipe-work, looms or harnesses. COMMON CAUSES OF REFRACTORY FAILURE 1. If the modules and support anchoring are missing, the most likely cause is an installation, insufficient stud welding, or excessive corrosion from the shell caused by sulphur or rust. Their job is to regulate the flow of gases and liquids in industrial processes. MINIATURE BUCK CONVERTER DELIVERS 4A The RPX-4.0 is rated to 3.8 to 36V input and programmable 1 to 7V output at 4A. With a compact 5mm x 5.5mm footprint and low 4.1mm height in a thermally-enhanced QFN package, the buck module pushes the limit on power density. WHY YOU SHOULD ADOPT A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SAFETY Safety is the state of being safe. To be safe is to be protected from an event, or from exposure to circumstances that can lead to a non-desirable consequence such as the loss of possessions, health, or at worst, loss of life. The term holistic was summarised excellently by the philosopher Aristotle: “The whole is more than the sum of its ENGINEERING NEWS & OPINION Read the latest engineering news across a number of sectors including: chemical, technology, software, oil and gas, mining and design onEngineer Live.

Previously exhausted EV batteries have been just dumped or partially recycled through a pyro-metallurgical processes with the low recovery rate of 40%. POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT METERS: PROS, CONS AND SELECTION All PD meters require clean fluid so a filtration level of 100µm is usual. Some meters can actually block the flow if a larger particle is trapped in the wrong place. Many meters are not made in high specification materials and therefore corrosion can be a concern. An all plastic or all 316SS meter is the exception rather than the rule. HOW CAN FISHING NETS BE RECYCLED? The results of compounding recycled fishing nets with virgin HDPE showed that another important variable is the blend ratio, as this further determines the properties of the material. The best overall results are 50/50. The strength of the recycled material is maintained and the processability conditions are improved. Standby equipment is intended to minimise downtime and keep process systems running. There are two distinct schools of thought when it comes to implementing standby pumps. This first is a duty/standby arrangement, where the standby pump is only required in the event of a duty pump failure. The standby pump then runs for as long as needed to POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT METERS: PROS, CONS AND SELECTION All PD meters require clean fluid so a filtration level of 100µm is usual.
