Ite Ad Joseph. “Go to Joseph.” These were the words of Pharaoh to the people of Egypt during the years of famine (Gen 41:55). These are the words inscribed at the base of the statue of St. Joseph in front of St. Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal.This Oratory was founded by St. André Bessette, who obtained many miraculous healings through the intercession of St. Joseph. THE LORD BE WITH YOU The priest begins the Mass, “The Lord be with you.”. He invites us to lift up our hearts, “The Lord be with you.”. He starts the dismissal, “The Lord be with you.”. We hear this expression so often at Mass that it almost sounds like a stock phrase and we forget that it means something. Yet the liturgy’s signs and symbols are MARY, MOTHER OF ST. DOMINIC First, Dominican friars take a vow of obedience to Blessed Mary, which constitutes the proper willingness to serve Our Lady. By our vow, we merely echo her words, “Let it be done to me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). With this vow, the friar submits everything in his life to his Queen—truly we say with our vows: “Totus tuus ego

HAIL, STAR OF THE SEA Hail, Star of the Sea. Not everyone gets a birthday on the liturgical calendar. The Church, by honoring Mary’s nativity today, celebrates her as one privileged from birth by a particular love of God, as the “favored one” (Luke 1:28). None of us were immaculately conceived and, chances are, we won’t be assumed into heaven at death either. ST. THERESE’S MANLY VIRTUES St. Therese’s Manly Virtues. Let me offer a caveat at the outset: I will be offering what is a characteristically masculine appreciation of St. Therese of Lisieux, not an exclusively masculine appreciation. I’m sure many women admire the virtues commented on here. Speaking of feminist eco-theology, an English Dominican once remarked BEYOND THE WORLD AND ME: A CHALLENGE TO TA-NEHISI COATES The traditional, rational, and commonsensical answer is the soul, the immaterial and immortal center of the self. This is the answer that those slaves sung about, of a reality beyond the world of the eyes, a reality in which God and they shared an existence beyond the physical.
