A PRAYER FOR CORPUS CHRISTI This Sunday the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, traditionally known by its Latin title, Corpus Christi. It is an occasion every year to remember especially what a great gift Jesus left us in the Holy Eucharist - the abiding sign of His Redemption and His THE SEVEN PRAYERS OF ST. GREGORY The Seven Prayers of St. Gregory. (I) O Lord Jesus, I adore you hanging on the Cross, bearing the thorny crown on your head. I beg you, that your Cross may free me from the Angel. Amen. Our Father. Hail Mary. (II) O Lord Jesus, I adore you wounded on the Cross, having drunk vinegar and gall. VIRTUES, GIFTS, AND FRUITS The cardinal virtues are four, and there are three theological ones. The traditional number of gifts is seven, and of fruits the Church gives us twelve. The final list comes to upwards of twenty-six items. Unsurprising then that many confirmandi find it difficult to comprehend what these “effects of the sacrament” amount to.

AND CAESAR WEPT…

And Caesar Wept. When Julius Caesar, at the age of 33, considered the achievements of Alexander the Great, he wept. His sighs and tears did not come as a result of mourning or fear for his own life, but from a sobering recognition: Alexander had conquered the world before the age of 33 and yet he (Caesar) had done nothing remotely similar THE NATIVITY: FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE The Nativity: Faith, Hope, and Love. St. Thomas Aquinas explains the fittingness of the Incarnation in several reasons, including how it raises our minds and hearts to an increase in faith, hope, and charity. Here I highlight a few of these reasons with respect to the Nativity of Christ and its manifestation. 1. 5 TIPS ON PRAYER WITH ST. THOMAS AQUINAS Here are five tips for praying better—with the help of St. Thomas Aquinas. 5. Be humble. Many people falsely think of humility as a virtue of a low self-esteem. St. Thomas teaches us that humility is a virtue of acknowledging the truth about reality. Since prayer, at its root, is an “asking” directed at God, humility is crucially

important.

SPIRITUALITY. FASHION. RESISTANCE. Spirituality. Fashion. Resistance. One sees many things while biking in Washington, D.C., but these three words from a mural (pictured above) jumped out to me immediately. I suppose that was the artist’s intention, and it worked, provoking me to even make a full stop and take a picture. Beyond 14 TOTALLY AWESOME THINGS ABOUT THE ORDER OF … 1. Preaching the Gospel. It doesn’t really get any more basic than this for the Order of Preachers. Some of our most famous preachers never even got into a pulpit. But of course, many others did. 2. Keepin’ it real in the capital. Life is a good thing. We want to witness to that wherever we are. WHY IS SURROGACY WRONG? Why is Surrogacy Wrong? Most people’s answer to the question in the title of this article would simply be, “In most cases, it’s not.”. JUDGING FRIENDSHIP

Judging Friendship. In each of my friends there is something that only some other friend can fully bring out. – C. S. Lewis. Last month, the country (and friars of our house) mourned the passing of Justice Antonin Scalia. Given the polarization that overshadows just about everything within the Beltway, the tone of the tributes varied widely. WATER | DOMINICANA

Scripture is full of recurring images and themes. God uses the physical—bread and wine, light and darkness, water and blood—to reveal the spiritual. Consider water. Water flows through the pages of Scripture, making many different appearances. Like a theme in a symphony, one mention of water recalls its earlier appearances, yet

each recurrence

ITE AD JOSEPH

Ite Ad Joseph. “Go to Joseph.” These were the words of Pharaoh to the people of Egypt during the years of famine (Gen 41:55). These are the words inscribed at the base of the statue of St. Joseph in front of St. Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal. This Oratory was founded by St. André Bessette, who obtained many miraculous healings through the intercession of St. Joseph. THE LORD BE WITH YOU The priest begins the Mass, “The Lord be with you.”. He invites us to lift up our hearts, “The Lord be with you.”. He starts the dismissal, “The Lord be with you.”. We hear this expression so often at Mass that it almost sounds like a stock phrase and we forget that it means something. Yet the liturgy’s signs and symbols are MARY, MOTHER OF ST. DOMINIC First, Dominican friars take a vow of obedience to Blessed Mary, which constitutes the proper willingness to serve Our Lady. By our vow, we merely echo her words, “Let it be done to me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). With this vow, the friar submits everything in his life to his Queen—truly we say with our vows: “Totus tuus ego

It’s another swelteringly hot day in Jerusalem and many good Jews, on their way into the Temple for worship, stop for a break in the shade of Solomon’s Portico. There they find a group of men (twelve to be exact) working many healing miracles and preaching in the name of Jesus the Nazarene. GROUNDED ON LOVE: ST. RECEPTACLES OF PRAYER: THE MONASTERY OF THE PERPETUALMONASTERIES IN

THE US

To praise God, to love Him, and to beseech Him on behalf of others. For the Dominican nuns of the Dominican Monastery of the Perpetual Rosary in Syracuse, New York, this is an apt description. In a sense, they have become receptacles of prayer. In March 1925, FIVE WAYS TO LISTEN TO GOD Here are five ways that the Lord speaks to us, which are also five ways that we can begin to prayerfully listen to him. 1. In silence. We need to be quiet to listen. To hear and recognize God’s voice requires us to put down what we are doing, cast our anxieties and troubles at God’s feet, and give our whole attention to him. CHURCHILL: A PREPARATION FOR TRIAL Churchill prepared for that ordeal all his life by developing his sense of judgment and rhetorical genius such that he would later write, “I felt as if I were walking with destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial.”. That preparation saved Western civilization in a moment of

need, and

HAIL, STAR OF THE SEA Hail, Star of the Sea. Not everyone gets a birthday on the liturgical calendar. The Church, by honoring Mary’s nativity today, celebrates her as one privileged from birth by a particular love of God, as the “favored one” (Luke 1:28). None of us were immaculately conceived and, chances are, we won’t be assumed into heaven at death either. ST. THERESE’S MANLY VIRTUES St. Therese’s Manly Virtues. Let me offer a caveat at the outset: I will be offering what is a characteristically masculine appreciation of St. Therese of Lisieux, not an exclusively masculine appreciation. I’m sure many women admire the virtues commented on here. Speaking of feminist eco-theology, an English Dominican once remarked BEYOND THE WORLD AND ME: A CHALLENGE TO TA-NEHISI COATES The traditional, rational, and commonsensical answer is the soul, the immaterial and immortal center of the self. This is the answer that those slaves sung about, of a reality beyond the world of the eyes, a reality in which God and they shared an existence beyond the physical. Ta-Nehisi Coates challenges us to give up a modern invention: race.

THE TIMELESS DOMINIC 2021 Summer Reading Recommendations:The Timeless Dominic by Richard T.A. Murphy, O.P. "Heaven doth with us as we with torches do,/Not light them for themselves; for if our virtues/Did not go forth of us, 'twere all alike/As if we had them not." So says the Duke of Vienna to Angelo in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 35-38). God uses the virtue of the saints not only to profit them but also to use them as "lights'' By Br. Micah Kim, O.P. |2021-05-23T16:17:59-04:00June 4, 2021|† Featured Series
