TYPES OF DIABETES
Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder, in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in the pancreas. When enough of these cells are destroyed, the body can no longer produce insulin, and glucose starts building up in the blood. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes can progress very rapidly. TYPE 1 DIABETES CAUSES Type 1 diabetes is a serious medical condition that interferes with the body's ability to absorb sugar out of the blood. If left untreated, it can cause severe symptoms and life-threatening complications. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 is not caused by a person's diet or lifestyle, but is instead linked to problems with theimmune system.
WHAT IS DIABETES?
Diabetes is a serious condition that causes higher than normal blood sugar levels. Diabetes occurs when your body cannot make or effectively use its own insulin, a hormone made by special cells in the pancreas called islets (eye-lets). TYPE 1 DIABETES CURE The truth is, while type 1 diabetes can be managed with insulin, diet and exercise, there is currently no cure. However, researchers with the Diabetes Research Institute are now working on treatments to reverse the disease, so that people with type 1 diabetes can live healthy lives without medication. WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS OF DIABETES? The onset of type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes, happens very quickly. The following symptoms may appear suddenly and are too severe to overlook: •Increased thirst. •Increased urination (bed-wetting may occur in children who have already been toilet trained) •Rapid and unexplained weight loss. •Extremehunger.
KETONES: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Ketones (acid) are a result of fat breakdown. The body breaks down fat when it cannot access sugar (glucose). Ketones are usually an indicator that there is little to no insulin. Ketones are usually associated with elevated glucose levels but can occur with in-range target glucose. Ketones are typically only monitored in type 1diabetes because
