The invasion of Eniwetok began on February 17, 1944, and the battle ended February 25, 1944. The two battles were part of the "Island Hopping" strategy that was the basis of the Allies’ plan to retake the Pacific. FOURTH BATTLE OF KHARKOV The Red Army had driven the Wehrmacht out of Kharkov on February 15, 1943, despite der FührerÙs orders to hold it. Der Führer flew to Field Marshal von MansteinÙs headquarters at Zaporozhye to "sort things out." Zaporozhye is located on the Dniepr River, and today has a population of 775, 000 and is the sixth largest city in the Ukraine.

Army Group North had become trapped there when the Red GERMAN COMMERCE RAIDERS IN WORLD WAR II The most famous of these commerce raiders was Atlantis, a ship of 7,860 tons and top speed of 17.5 knots, and enough fuel capacity to sail for 60,000 miles. Under the command of Captain Bernhard Rogge the Atlantis’ cruise lasted for 622 days. She

He took a classical guitar course in college and fell in love with the instrument. He learned quickly, started to play solo gigs, and then put together a band, called Riptide, which played 35 YEARS OF GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY To present a very special show to be held on Friday, June 28th, at the Paddock Night Club at the Party Block in Ocean City, Md. Dave took a few minutes to talk about the band with me. “The band was formed in February of 1977 as a country/rock bluegrass band,” Dave says. “They soon began to drift more towards Southern Rock,” he

With the absence of Woodworth, the two bands decided to join together. The name Climbadonkey stayed. “A guy who was a friend of the band had a dream,” said Hird, explaining the origin of the band’s name. “He was at a children’s zoo and there was a burro there who would give children rides. This was the first time in nearly 10 years that Rick played a show without his son Lennon on keyboards. Lennon was off enjoying the music at Firefly Festival, a present for his 18th birthday. SoRicky was accompanied by Eddie Saah on bass and Phil ‘the Bucket’ on drums. They both did a great job, even adding backup vocals.

Konstanty Plisowski. German motorcyclists and Soviet tanks at joint German-Soviet victory parade, June 22, 1939, in Brest. This week, seventy years ago, 800,000 soldiers of the Red Army, divided into two “Fronts,” or army groups, led by Generals Mikhail Kovalyov and Semyon Timoshenko, moved into eastern Poland, in order to OPERATION DRAGOON THE INVASION OF SOUTHERN FRANCE Seventy years ago, on 15 August 1944, Operation Dragoon was launched, nine weeks after the landings in Normandy. The invasion force, which landed on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, included troops from the U.S.,France, and the United Kingdom. This invasion force was not as large as the Normandy D-Day force. THE CAPTURE OF FORT EBEN EMAEL At 13:30 hours on 11 May, the fortress surrendered. Almost 1200 Belgian soldiers were captured. The attack was a success for the Germans, as the fort was taken and the vital bridges captured intact. The Germans lost 6 men killed out of the 85 who set out on the attack

with 15 wounded.
