WHAT'S ON ~ CHAWTON HOUSE Exhibition: Made in Lockdown. Throughout Lockdown, many of our volunteers used their deep knowledge of the house and gardens as inspiration for a creative project. The result is Made in Lockdown, an exhibition that runs throughout Chawton House. Monday 17th May 2021 to YOUR VISIT ~ CHAWTON HOUSE If you are looking for things to do in Hampshire, a visit to Chawton House makes a great day out. Whether you are inspired by women’s literature, keen to follow in the footsteps of Jane Austen in Hampshire, looking to explore the gardens, or simply to enjoy lunch in The Old Kitchen Tearoom, our friendly staff and volunteers will giveyou a warm welcome.
THE HOUSE ~ CHAWTON HOUSE The house you can visit today is over four hundred years old. It was built by the Knight family in the 1580s following the acquisition of the estate by Nicholas Knight in 1578. There was already a manor house on the estate prior to this, first recorded in 1224. This painting by Mellichamp (c.1740) has a secret. THE GARDENS ~ CHAWTON HOUSE The gardens feature two terraces both of which were built by Montagu Knight in the early 1900s and bear evidence of the influence of Sir Edwin Lutyens who was a close friend. At the highest point of the grounds is the Walled Garden, built by Edward Austen, and referred to in Jane Austen’s letters (though sadly, she died before itscompletion).
THE OLD KITCHEN TEAROOM ~ CHAWTON HOUSE The Old Kitchen Tearoom is open daily to the public 10am – 4pm. Seating is on a first come, first serve basis with table service in operation. Indoor diners are restricted to groups of 6 but for larger groups we have additional seating in our Courtyard. Last orders at3.30pm.
