KNOWING NATIVE PLANTS: FOCUS ON FERNS (VIRTUAL PROGRAM, JUNE 5) __Saturday, June 5 - 2:00 pm__$25.00 There are some native plants, such as ferns, don’t flower at all. In this popular program, Ed Lignowski, PhD, will teach you to identify many native ferns. He will highlight their evolutionary history and unusual reproductive habits, as well as their natural habitats and usefulness in native plant gardens. Advance registration required. KNOWING NATIVE PLANTS: INVASIVE SPECIES IDENTIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT (VIRTUAL PROGRAM, JUNE 19) __Saturday, June 19 - 10:00 am__$25.00 What is an invasive plant? What problems do invasive plants cause? Join Mary Anne Borge to learn the answers to these questions, as well as how to identify the most common and troublesome invasive plant species in the Delaware Valley region. You'll also learn about several alternatives for control of these exotic intruders, many without the use of chemicals. Presented By: Mary Anne Borge Mary Anne Borge is a naturalist, photographer, author and educator. A naturalist at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve since 2006, she is a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist and editor of Butterfly Gardener magazine. She is the team leader for Lambertville Goes Wild, a volunteer group whose efforts successfully led to the National Wildlife Federation’s certification of Lambertville, N.J., as a community wildlife habitat. At her blog, the-natural-web.org, Mary Anne writes about and, with her photography, illustrates the importance of native plants to all life on Earth. Advance registration required. NORTH AMERICAN BUTTERFLY ASSOCIATION (NABA) BUTTERFLY COUNT 2021 __Saturday, July 24 - 9:30 am__From $0.00 Join us for an event focusing on our fluttering friends. Why count butterflies? It helps scientists piece together the big picture of the distribution and population size of each species counted, including changes over time. And it's fun! You will learn to identify the different types of butterflies and the native plants that they utilize for nectar and caterpillar food at the Preserve. Please bring binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens, and a field guide, if you have one. Make sure you have plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate sun protection. The count will run from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. Join us for all or part of the morning; all experience levels are welcome, from beginners to experienced butterfliers. In accordance with our COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan, we are limiting the number of participants at 12, and attendees of this on-site program must follow appropriate social distancing measures, including wearing a mask. Please meet the group at the Visitor Center. Registration is requiredfor this event.
