ANNA BULLUS
From her earliest years, Anna Bullus was passionate about making things. “As a kid, I was fascinated by how objects were put together,” she recalls and I was always drawing or making stuff. In some ways, it was strange because neither of my parents went down the creative route in their careers, although both of them have an exceptionally creative approach to problem-solving.”JOANNA HARDY
Joanna Hardy’s earliest memories are inextricably linked with making things. “My father was an entrepreneur, whose business involved, amongst many things, petrol stations, slot machines and jukeboxes, but he also found great satisfaction in making things. He could fix anything and as a young girl I would be so impressed with his DIYskills.

Welcome to Bedales Schools BEDALES WAS FOUNDED BY JOHN HADEN BADLEY IN 1893 TO BE A HUMANE ALTERNATIVE TO THE AUTHORITARIAN REGIMES TYPICAL OF LATE-VICTORIANPUBLIC SCHOOLS.
We aim to create an environment where questioning, divergent thinking and the freedom to learn from mistakes are all encouraged. First rate teaching and learning, with formative and summative assessment, must underpin academic excellence. These qualities, which create lifelong learners and develop both critical and creative thinking, should permeate every area of our lives – whether that be in assemblies, conversations or classrooms.Explore our schools

Read more about Bedales The Bedales Difference Educating the whole person We encourage our pupils to understand not only their subjects, but humanity and their place in the world, from as many different perspectives and experiences as possible. A Bedales education is shaped by the individual. Our job is to help our pupils to work out where they want to go, and then to get there. When they leave us, we want them to feel comfortable in their own skins, to know their own minds, and to have found their voices. We also want them to have a sophisticated sense of the situations and needs of others, and the moral purpose and skills to act upon it.Read more
In search of a better education The world young people enter at 18 can be turbulent, complex and demanding. We work together to ensure that every student leaves us having discovered their own talents, passions and identities, with a powerful sense of responsibility to others. Life at Bedales is lived both for its own sake – pupils enjoy coming to school – and in anticipation of that to come. Founded in 1893 as a human alternative to the authoritarian regimes typical of late Victorian public schools, we remain progressively liberal in our approach, not for the sake of being different, but because we believe it is important for a properly rounded and relevanteducation.

Anticipating adult life At Bedales, there is no uniform, and staff and pupils address each other by first names – just two features of a culture that values the individual, with mutual respect its cornerstone. If there is no good reason to constrain pupils in their choices, then we don’t. In fact, we involve them in forging the framework within which the community lives, learns and grows. Bedales gives young people the confidence and space to play with ideas, with the individual’s obligations to others an essential partof this contract.

Educating the whole person We encourage our pupils to understand not only their subjects, but humanity and their place in the world, from as many different perspectives and experiences as possible.
