Instead they perform a so-called ‘death roll’, in which they latch onto the carcass and tear off large pieces. Interestingly, they are known to swallow stones, known as gastroliths, which help break down their food and speed up digestion. Even so, the process of digestion can take up to a week. ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SMARTEST ANIMAL SPECIES IN THE WORLD What is animal intelligence? Intelligence is one of the defining features of being human and it comes in various forms. For example, there’s verbal-linguistic intelligence (communicative ability), spatial intelligence (the ability to observe the world with the mind’s eye), logical-mathematical intelligence (the ability to solve mathematical problems) and emotional intelligence (the ability POPULATION DYNAMICS MODELS: LEVINS AND THE SOURCE-SINK THEORY Metapopulations: a great resource in conservation biology. These processes especially affect sensitive organisms, such as amphibians or birds. Additionally, they lead to loss of genetic variability, which may ultimately make a species go extinct. ANIMAL’S SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: GROUP LIVING The advantage here is obtained by animals that move in a fluid medium, as they save energy by travelling in group. For example, birds that travel in a V-shaped formation during migrations do so more efficiently, benefiting from the thrust generated at the ends of the wings of the birds that fly in the first rows of the group. Almost certainly, we are talking about a vertebrate animal. HOW DOES ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR DEVELOP? The study of animal behaviour allows us to understand how individuals solve the various problems that life throws at them, as well as to discover the tactics and strategies that combine to help resolve these conflicts. Basically, it could be said that behaviour is a decisionmaking process.

There are, in fact, two species of extant African elephant; the other is the smaller African forest elephant, Loxodonta cyclotis.. Their characteristic trunks are used for breathing PERCEPTION IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM: THREE UNIQUE INFORMATION What is perception? The Cambridge Dictionary defines perception as “the awareness of things through the physical senses”, an awareness that will depend on the information collected by the sensory organs and the brain’s interpretation of it. Perception is an interpretation dependent on context and requires a chemical or mechanical stimulation of the special nerve cells (the receptors). FOUR ANIMALS AND THEIR FASCINATING WAYS OF FEEDING A part of growing up is learning how to eat, but mealtime etiquette can be a tricky business. From culture to culture, there are a range of elaborate rules that apply. WHY DOES DWARFISM OCCUR IN NATURE? PYGMY ANIMALS AND THEIR Pet pygmies. We’re obsessed by extremes in size. Children’s books and toys are dominated by Africa’s big mammals and there’s no shortage of nature documentaries about ‘the world’s biggest predators’. But, when it comes to pets, the opposite seems to betrue.

HOW MANY TYPES OF DINOSAURS EXISTED ON EARTH? ARE THEY ALL Since the origins of life on Earth (2,700 million years ago), evolution has left the footprint of countless living organisms on the planet. Some evolved into new species, while others, due to different environmental factors, have disappeared. As is the case with thedinosaurs.

THE DOMESTICATION OF ANIMALS: ORIGINS, GENERAL The domestication of animals: origins, general characteristics and stages. In the last few years, the idea that human development has been altered by the cultural changes and transformations that have occurred throughout the centuries seems to have gained ground. Indeed, these cultural processes have an obvious impact on human evolution. They grow up to 8 cm in length and, at their prime, they can give birth to REPRODUCTIVE STRATEGIES AND MATING: THE FOUNDATIONS OF Reproductive strategies in males and females. The reproductive strategies of males and females are related to the characteristics of their respective gametes: while sperm cells are abundant, “cheap” and easy to replace, ovules are scarce and more costly to obtain; this leads males and females to carry out different reproductive strategies.. Nonetheless, the role of each gender during POPULATION DYNAMICS MODELS: LEVINS AND THE SOURCE-SINK THEORY Metapopulations: a great resource in conservation biology. This could be intraspecies communication, such as sounds and vocalisations produced by whales in a pod. But it also includes interspecies communication, which can be seen in cases of great apes being taught to use sign language. WHY DOES DWARFISM OCCUR IN NATURE? THE AMAZON MOLLY: THE SMALL FISH MAKING A BIG SPLASH IN The Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa) is a small, inconspicuous freshwater fish. It belongs to a genus of around 40 fish species, which includes the well-known guppy. Amazon mollies are omnivores and spend their days feeding on small invertebrates, algae and plant matter in rivers and streams along the Gulf Coast of Mexico and Texas.__

Our project is based on three key areas: The dissemination of information about nature and the animal kingdom, the underlying values of protection and conservation, and art. This is what drives Zoo Portraits. Our portraits of dressed animals are (ironic) caricatures for us to identify with. They help us learn how to protect the species that they represent. And through the sale of art prints and other products in our online store, we can continue to grow and support wildlife conservation projects.EXHIBITIONS
