FIELD REPORT #1: A PHD ABOUT WRITING WITH HIS ZETTELKASTEN* May 27th, 2021
* by @henrikenggaard It is not difficult to find articles that herald the benefits of using a Zettelkasten and because of this, a dose of skepticism is perhaps healthy. Do you really get magically productive? Produce world-class research? Uncover secret connections for elevated understanding? Write 10 books spontaneously? In my case, neither of those, but I do think there is a point in telling about experiences (positive and negative) and here I’ll share a bit of mine on a recent conference paper I presented andpublished
.
This is not some amazing breakthrough or epiphany; but it is an interesting angle to an existing problem using ideas that were not obvious before working with the Zettelkasten. I want to talk about this paper specifically because it truly _emerged_ in my Zettelkasten. Ideas obviously come from many sources and a Zettelkasten is not going to replace discussions with colleagues or reading papers. However, in this case, the Zettelkasten allowed me to, piece-by-piece, connect the dots and produce a “new idea”. To tell my tale, I will have to throw in a bit of jargon related to my research field. It is not key to understanding the workflow, but it just felt too vague otherwise. I hope it isn’t too impenetrable. I should also say that I use TiddlyWiki, but nothing is specific to any software: you could probably do this with penand paper.
PLANTING SEEDS, GAINING INSIGHT A Zettelkasten has sometimes been described as a conversation partner, but that only really works if it is “fed”. A good diet is called for and in the spring and summer of 2020, I was working on some research for understanding the relevance of noise in optical fibers in relation to maximum data rates. The big deal with this is that optical fibers have a kind of feedback: changing the signal changes the noise too. This is vastly different from, for example, wireless communication and it is the bane of cutting-edge optical communication research. While working on this I was throwing the observations and results into my Zettelkasten. Usually something in the sense of “Property A depends on property B” or “A is defined by”. Occasionally, I would also ask questions about things I did not know: “Does this property predict that?”, “Why does this property do so and so?” Of course, all these notes are well connected. Many of these notes were made with a project / paper in mind, but as that paper developed and gained a good narrative, notes were “left out”. They were of course still in the Zettelkasten, but they werenot “used”.
These two paragraphs above form one of the big paradigm changes in note taking for me. Instead of notes where ideas and references are “locked” into a specific project, they are all connected through the links in the Zettelkasten. There is a warehouse or parking space for notes, even when they lose a purpose or when their purpose is notfully known.
Come late summer and the paper is done and I have some “free time” to explore new ideas. Here the question notes come into play. I look up those I find interesting and start exploring the connections: Where do they lead? What can I see? The technicalities are not super important, but I use links, backlinks and a graph view to explore. The graph view is limited to 2nd order connections, which reduces clutter a lot. I think the spatial nature allows for a different mindset when using it. The view is interactive, so static pictures don’t do it justice, but is the graph for one of the question notes:Snapshot
of the interactive graph view And a zoom on some of the notes:Close-up of
the graph
Another way of exploring that I like is through search. While writing an outline, I might search for a note to insert and then see something else in the result, which might be interesting:Exploring
through search
Anyway, I had some “free time” and during the first part of that week, I pieced together this: Two properties called KLD and SNR, can be used to predict a third property: optimal shaping factor (λ). The shaping factor controls a trade-off between signal power and noise, but because of the mentioned feedbacks in optical fibers, it is very tricky to describe the optimal choice. Normally it would require numerical optimization or detailed modelling. I arrived at the relationship through observations about the optimal choices from my earlier work and some unused notes. Observations of what happens when power (SNR) is swept, and distance is swept etc. Additionally, I had used KLD, for analyzing noise and I noticed that it was affected more at higher power-levels. Together, these should then predict an otherwise “unpredictable” factor; at least if the observations were correct. I prototyped a machine learning system to learn the relationship and by the end of the week, I had the principle demonstrated. From here, it is of course a matter of research and understanding the problem fully. Through discussion with colleagues and some more thinking in the Zettelkasten, we ended up going in a different direction, but my point is not that a Zettelkasten spits out fully formed results. It lets you explore things you already “know”, but just have never put in the right context. WRITING AND REWRITING Another benefit of a Zettelkasten is its supposed power as a writing tool. When writing the first outline for the above paper, there was nothing more fun than exploring all sorts of connections and ideas I could fit into the outline. Again, I use search to inspire myself during the writing process. With well-written note titles, it is even possible to use them directly in the outline. However, this first outline and the draft it produced needed veryheavy editing.
Writing with a Zettelkasten is both easy and hard. It is easy to throw something together and have elaborate connections, but from an outline, there is still quite a way to a good paper. When writing, especially a 2-3 page conference submission, the story has to be sharp and to the point and immediately understandable. Our first submission was rejected (we had only worked on it for a month and rushed to get it ready for a deadline). We regrouped and cleaned up the narrative for a later conference and thiswas accepted.
I want to mention this, since Zettelkasten definitely helps with references and finding connections, but good writing does notcome magically.
------------------------- SASCHA’S COMMENT: There three aspects I want to highlight: _First_, everybody has his own experience. Some are already doing a lot of what is part of the Zettelkasten Method. For them, the Zettelkasten Method is just a nice tool. Other struggle with connected thinking. They report a big positive change when they adopt the Zettelkasten Method. _Second_, seeing your present thought in the light of all of your thinking theory is way different than just relating it to your current project. _Third_, the Zettelkasten Method does not do anything for you. It enhances you efforts. So, if you just use your Zettelkasten to interconnect ideas why would you expect that the text you assemble is more than just connected ideas? It is indeed a false advertisment. CHRISTIAN’S COMMENT: I especially liked one of Henrik’s closing thoughts: “Writing with a Zettelkasten is both easy and hard.” This resonates with my experience, because the work I have to do during clean-up is immense, and yet the assembly step right before that feels very natural and productive – provided I have notes on the topic, of course. Even with the ‘magic tool’ that is a Zettelkasten, you have to put in work to complete a project. Anyway: congrats, Henrik!* ∞ Permalink

INSERT A NEW ZETTEL WHERE YOU ARE WITH WILL’S MACRO* May 19th, 2021
* by Christian
Forum legend @Will showcased another Keyboard Maestro macro this week that does a particularly interesting thing: from anywhere you are in your web of notes, his macro ties a new Zettel into the web. Check out the GIF teaser for Will’s 10-minute YouTube demo:The
GIF shows how the ‘Archive Note from link’ template injects a Zettel at the selection Wills’ demonstration basically goes like this: * In a list of topics, select a topic you want to expand on (here: “Laminar Thinking”). * Invoke the macro. * See how the macro (1) adds a ‘forward link’ to a new Zettel next to the selection, (2) creates a new, empty Zettel, automatically titled “Laminar Thinking”, plus other template metadata. Imagine your preparing to write a text and use an outline to sketch ideas. Now you find that on a particular item in the outline has a lot of sub-items and could use a new Zettel as an overview. Select the item’s text and use @Will’s macro to insert a Zettel right at that point. CHECK OUT HIS VIDEO WITH EXPLANATION ON THE FORUMS.* ∞ Permalink

MEASURE WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE WITH YOUR ZETTELKASTEN* Apr 15th, 2021
* by Sascha
The user _@wanderley_ opened a thread in the forum.
He basically wrote that whenever he creates a Zettel, he goes into a research frenzy to make the Zettel “worthy” of his Zettelkasten. In his example, he transformed a report based on experience into a claim supported by quite some evidence. But one statement stood out to me: > I will never finish processing my notes at this pace. the other > hand, it feels wrong to add a permanent note without backing it up. I asked him if his true objective was to finish to process his notes. I asked the question instinctively, because as a coach I often encounter difficulties with proper goal setting: Let’s say a female client asks me for training advice to improve her looks. I then ask her to specify her goal. As a reply, she sends a photo of a fitness model. My objection could be that her bone structure would not allow her to reach such a goal, but let’s assume the goal is achievable. I then need to S.M.A.R.T-ify the goal. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. I need to transform something vague into something concrete. My method is to create strength and endurance based goals that correlate with aesthetics. One of the subgoals is to have a nice butt. But what does it mean? For my female client, it means to squat with a barbell on her back with 1.5 times her bodyweight for six repetitions. Then we would re-assess her butt and re-adjust the strategy. Picture byarielrobinon Pixabay
This process of transforming unclear yearnings into tangible goals is one of the key elements of being productive. If a field permits avoiding to measure success, you can be certain that 90% of the people are not productive. There will be a lot of deception – self-deception, and deception of others. Do avoid this problem we need to make our efforts and their results measurable. I for example have tested: * General productivity vs time I had invested. (Zettel per day or session.) Refinement of Structure Zettel in 2017 resulted in an increase of 10.04% of overall Zettel production. The initial introduction of Structure Zettel increased my production manifold – no previous throughput was measured, but I doubled my productivity at least according to my total Zettel count within one year, from 3000to 6000.
* My Zettelkasten is too young to produce large amounts of books. The articles of my German blog are not taken into account. But the amount of research possible per time window has increased, demonstrated by the amount of carefully researched evidence (superficial commentary work does not count). * The amount of written words per deep work session increased from 2000–3000 words to 4000–10000 per day by some refinement in 2017. * Subjective increase in break-through moments in that time period – confirmed by Christian.Word count
statistics per day. Notice the increase of productivy after I refined how I use Structure Notes I do not quantify my work often. Therefore I only have a few key data points. However, I do track temporarily how different changes impact my productivity. At the time of this writing, the claim that the Zettelkasten Method is a productive way to work is not demonstrated in public. Take statements about its awesomeness with the proper grain of salt. I personally know that this claim is true but there is a big difference between personal knowledge about something andsolid evidence.
I will close this gap. I criticise the lack of real world demonstrations. It seems that the experts in this field produce material mainly inside this field. The situation is similar to those of success coaches who are just successful at being success coaches but at nothing else. Naturally, I feel obliged to create some of my work under the public eye. My recommendation to you is: Figure out how you can measure your definition of success and then track your progress, and if there is any at all. For example: * Track the number of thoughts you write down in a well-formulated way. * Track the number of blog posts you publish if you are a blogger. * Track the number of daily written words . (Disclaimer: that’sChristian’s app)
* Track your behaviour via apps like Timing. Then you will see where others remain blind. ------------------------- CHRISTIAN’S COMMENT: Measurement is a controversial topic, and I think it’s important to keep in mind that the same number can be an indicator of productivity for someone, and a vanity metric for someone else. I think that it’s important to measure things that are important to you if you want to get clarity. It sure helps to conquer doubt, and can give perspective to small improvement that add up in the long run but feel insignificant on their own. Since every Zettel you write equals time you never get back, its creation has opportunity cost. Is the Zettel and the Zettelkasten Method worth _your_ time? You can only find an answer to this question when you know where you want to go, and then figure out if you really get there.* ∞ Permalink

USE CASE: INVESTING WITH THE ZETTELKASTEN METHOD* Mar 20th, 2021
* by Sascha
Picture by Mohamed Hassanfrom Pixabay
I am not an investment professional. I do invest in stock and some other assets to create passive income through dividends and to build a safety net. I don’t make the time-commitment for in-depth research. I merely want to avoid dumb decisions. So I created a table of conditions that a company needs to meet before I buy stock. This is a snapshot in time. It is a work in progressof course:
| Metric | Good | Super | Dumb | No | Reference | | -------------- | ----- | ---- | ----- | ------- | ---------------- | | PEG-Ratio | <1 | <1,3 | >1 | | | | Payout-Ratio | <100% | <55% | >100% | | | | Divid.yield | >0% | >4% | 0 | | | | Conseq. Divid. | >10 | >25 | 0 | | | | Free Cash Flow | | | | | | | P/E ratio | | | | | | | Price-Share-Ratio | | | | | | | Total Price | | | | | | | Revenue | + | ++ | ± o. +/- | - o. -- | | The corresponding Structure Note is divided up into three parts: * The first subsection is the explanation of this table. It’s just a paragraph that roughly translates to: “The knockout method of investing means that every investing decision should be guided by knockout criteria. If a stock does not meet even one of those criteria then it is not worth the investment.” * The second subsection has this table in it. * The third subsection is my thinking canvas on this methodof investing.
Rough
structure of the note The table is the central element that has a strong pull on all the notes on investing stock criteria, metaphorically speaking. I link to them in the “references”-column. Whenever I learn something new on investing in stock I go to this structure note and try to improve the metrics in question. So, there is a strong tag ##stocks (in German, though) placed to enforce this habit.TAKE-AWAY
Many specific questions on the Zettelkasten Method shouldn’t be asked assuming that the Zettelkasten Method has a specific solution for that problem. You should rather figure out what you want to achieve, and then use the Zettelkasten Method to guide your steps and actions within your body of notes. This three-part note for example is not something the Zettelkasten Method instructed me to do. Instead, I developed a practical tool that functions as a prism to focus my knowledge on stock evaluation. It happens to be a structure note. It is very easy to get caught up in the details of features that the software you use offers, and even in the good practices of the Zettelkasten Method itself. The way out of this confusion is to take a step back and ask yourself: What do you need to craft to accomplish your task? What tool do you need? Then the Zettelkasten Method comes into play to guide your actions in organising the notes to supportyour task.
------------------------- CHRISTIAN’S COMMENT: When I read this for the first time, I thought this would be super useful for newcomers to the method. When we talk about Structure Notes, we usually talk about lists, table of contents style, and this could give a falsely strict impression. But we can create overviews in a lot of ways – images, graphs, or tables. If nothing else, this is a gentle reminder to not worry about the one true correct form of a Structure Note. Structures can takemany forms.
