FERNANDO'S FOOTSTEPS Fernando's Footsteps. Sit back and relax as you enjoy “Fernando’s Footsteps”, a series of mini stories about Fernando Suarez Menéndez, a Spanish immigrant from Asturias who arrives in Tampa via Cuba in the late 1800s. Follow Fernando and his stories of adversity, courage, and triumph, published every Tuesday and Thursday. PART 1 - WELCOME TO YBOR CITY MUSEUM As the young man complied, he began walking across the cabin to a doorway leading to an exterior deck, eventually making his way to the bow of this vessel, and saw his first view of the United States dead ahead. As they passed through a somewhat narrow strait, he was amazed at how flat the terrain was. Before him was an incredibly largeestuary

PART 2 - WELCOME TO YBOR CITY MUSEUM At the bottom of the gangplank, the young Spaniard briefly hesitated, lifted his right foot, then emphatically placed it on land. A combination of anticipation, optimism, pride and trepidation raced through his mind as he took his first step in the United States. This is a work of fiction. YBOR'S MELTING POT!
Our culture is deeply rooted in the flavors and aromas of foods that were introduced in Ybor City beginning with the earliest immigrant groups. In January, we launched a new series that celebrates the history of Ybor City's traditional dishes, and the food fusion that occurred long before it became a buzzword in todays culinary scene. Ybor City was truly a "melting pot" in every sense of the word! Stories and recipes will be posted on social media pages, newsletters and this website. If you'd like to receive our e-newsletters with the latest updates and information, please send us an email by CLICKINGHERE and using the
Contact Form to let us know you want to receive our newsletters.PROGRAMS
The Ybor City Museum State Park has reopened. Please CLICK HERE for more information. We hope to see you soon. The annual Buildings Alive! Ybor City Architecture Hop will be presented virtually, and a new video will be created to provide behind-the-scenes tours of some of Ybor City's iconic and historic buildings. Stay tuned for more information on the event. If you are following "Fernando's Footsteps" , a tale of old Tampa written by Tony Carreño, you can catch up on the chapters posted on our website or view videos of past readings on the Ybor City Museum Society Facebook page. More chapters will be published later this spring. Bringing local families together to celebrate the game, the Tampa Baseball Museum at the Al Lopez House launched a Facebook Live series entitled "Who's on Wednesdays". You can
watch videos of guests including Joe Maddon, Orestes Destrade, Marc Topkin, Wes Singletary, Tony Saladiono, Neil Solondz, and others on the Tampa Baseball Museum's Facebook page. As always, your support has meant a lot last year as we met the challenge of presenting programs in new ways. If you are in a position to do so, please consider a donation of any size so we can continue to share Ybor City's unique history in 2021.VISION
The Ybor City Museum Society is the primary interpreter and conservator of Ybor City's rich history and heritage. Our multidisciplinary programs and exhibits provide educational experiences about the people and events that brought immigrant groups together beginning in 1886. Many of them worked in Tampa's renowned cigar industry or provided essential goods and services to those who did. These early citizens of Ybor City preserved their own traditions and were the first contributors to the City's cultural diversity, whose mores and flavors are still evident in modern-day Tampa.
