What I’m Hearing: After 14 Marlins players and employees tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19, how will MLB moveforward. USA TODAY

PHILADELPHIA — Instead of playing at Philadelphia as originally scheduled or coming home on Tuesday, the New York Yankees instead traveled to Baltimore. It's all part of the strange and ever-altering landscape of the 2020MLB season.
Tuesday night’s Yankees-Philadelphia Phillies game was postponed, wiping out a scheduled two-game interleague series at Citizens BankPark.
Now, the Yankees will now play the Baltimore Orioles in a two-game series at Camden Yards beginning Wednesday night. The changes were caused by a breakout of COVID-19 on the Miami Marlins, following a weekend series at Citizens Bank Park. Originally, the Yankees were scheduled to host the Phillies for two games Wednesday and Thursday. Now, the Phillies are awaiting further COVID-19 test results and the Marlins are essentially being furtherquarantined.
CALDERA: MLB's worst fears are here as Marlins COVID-19 outbreak postpones Yankees-Phillies game Yankees players were presented with the Baltimore option early Tuesday afternoon and approved the switch. The club was to arrive at Camden Yards for an 8 p.m. workout Tuesday night. In making this sharp pivot, "their attitude is, ‘Tell us where and we’ll be there,’’’ said Yankees general manager Brian Cashman of his players. “And I think that’s a very powerful statement bythem.’’
SCHEDULING CHANGE
Standing by at their Philadelphia hotel room Tuesday, the Yankees were 45 minutes from boarding buses to New York for a mid-afternoon workout at Yankee Stadium when MLB asked players to consider the Baltimoreplan.
The Yankees' equipment truck had already departed and had to turnaround.
MLB has postponed Marlins games through Sunday to allow the club time "to focus on providing care for their players and planning their Baseball Operations for a resumption early next week.'' Monday night's Yankees-Phillies game was postponed on Monday morning – just hours before the Yankees were due to arrive at the same visiting clubhouse the Marlins had just occupied - after several Marlins players and staff tested positive for COVID-19. ON THE ROAD WITH THE YANKEES: What it's like to cover this unique 2020season | Caldera
The Marlins were quarantined at their Philadelphia hotel and their scheduled Monday game against the Baltimore Orioles was postponed at Miami for a second straight night. Early Tuesday afternoon, Yankees players were given a menu of options as to their next step. “Obviously, we want to play,’’ said Zack Britton, the Yankees' union representative. “Our team has done a pretty good job overall of following the protocols,'' said Britton, and the Yankees "did not want to “take three or four days off’’ when there was a chance to play. _STORY CONTINUES BELOW GALLERY_ FacebookTwitterGoogle+Fullscreen

Originally, a two-game series involving the Yanks and Phils had been set to begin on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. Speaking Tuesday with SiriusXM’s MLB Network Radio, Phillies manager Joe Girardi said: “I think it’s really smart of Major League Baseball to wait one more day, just because the incubation period is 2-14 days’’ for coronavirus. “And I know we can’t wait 14 days but we really have to be smart about this,’’ Girardi said. “There’s too much at stake when you talk about players, their health and their family’shealth.’’
Girardi added that he might react differently about his club taking the field again if a similar situation occurs. “We had some players that probably had some trepidation’’ about playing Sunday against the Marlins, “just because there’s close contact,’’ Girardi said, especially between the catcher and first baseman to opposing players. Regarding the Marlins’ outbreak, Girardi said it “could happen’’ to multiple organizations, “and if everyone doesn’t play 60 games, that’s all right. We want to get to the playoffs,’’ with winning percentages used to decide postseasonqualifiers.
Despite the serious threat to MLB's 60-game season caused by the Marlins' outbreak, commissioner Rob Manfred did not view this as anightmare scenario.
"I don't put this in the nightmare category,'' Manfred said during a Monday night interview on MLB Network about Miami's situation and its impact on other clubs. "We built the protocols to allow us to continue to play,'' which includes the expansion of rosters and an available pool of up to 60 players. "We think we can keep people safe and continue to play.'' _Pete Caldera is the Yankees beat writer for NorthJersey.com.
