ZETA WEAKENS TO A TROPICAL STORM AFTER MAKING LANDFALL AS A CATEGORY 2 HURRICANE IN LOUISIANA Updated Oct 29, 2020; Posted Oct 28, 2020 Zeta made landfall in Louisiana around 4 p.m. Wednesday with 110 mph winds. Hurricane Zeta made landfall in southeast Louisiana on Wednesday afternoon and battered the storm-weary state with high winds, deadly storm surge and torrential rain. Zeta weakened to a tropical storm early Thursday as it spread flooding rain, damaging winds and power outages far inland into Mississippi andAlabama.
The National Hurricane Center said that the eye of Zeta moved onshore near Cocodrie, La., around 4 p.m. CDT Wednesday with 110 mph winds, making it a top-end Category 2 hurricane. _HERE IS __WHAT ALABAMA CAN EXPECT__.
FOLLOW US HERE FOR ALL THE __LATEST DEVELOPMENTS ON ZETA__._
Zeta has weakened as of 1 a.m. Thursday with winds down to 70 mph, according to the hurricane center. Hurricane, storm surge and tropical storm warnings have been dropped for Louisiana and Mississippi but tropical storm and surge warnings remain for Alabama and Florida, both along the coast and inland aswell.
Zeta is moving quickly inland and could bring damaging winds far into Alabama and Georgia overnight, forecasters said. As of 1 a.m. CDT Thursday, the center of Tropical Storm Zeta was located about 25 miles south-southeast of Tuscaloosa and was racing to the northeast at 31 mph. Zeta is forecast to track across Alabama overnight. Zeta was a strong tropical storm with winds of 70 mph as of 1 a.m. Thursday, the hurricane center said. Here are some wind reports from Louisiana earlier tonight: Hurricane and storm surge warnings have been dropped for the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts as of early Thursday. Here’s a look at the warnings as of Thursday morning: * A storm surge warning is in effect from the Mississippi-Alabama border to Navarre, Fla., as well as Pensacola Bay and Mobile Bay. * A tropical storm warning is in effect from the Mississippi/Alabama border to the Walton/Bay county line in Florida. Zeta could bring 4 to 7 feet of surge to the Gulf Coast from the mouth of the Pearl River to Dauphin Island in Alabama. Lesser amounts will be possible elsewhere. Mobile Bay could see 4 to 6 feet of surge, and the Alabama coast east of Dauphin Island could get 3 to 5 feet, the hurricane center said. Zeta will be moving quickly but could bring a good dose of rain. Two to 4 inches of rain will be possible from coastal areas through the Southeast and into the mid-Atlantic states through this evening, forecasters said.
Tornadoes will also be a concern and will be most likely through tonight across parts of Mississippi, south Alabama and the westernFlorida Panhandle.
Zeta is the only storm being tracked by the hurricane center, but forecasters added an area to watch -- again in the western Caribbean -- to the board. The hurricane center said it could become a tropical depression by early next week. Don't look now but there's another area to watch for tropical development in the western Caribbean.
