HALL FARM - WORLD HORSE WELFARE Hall Farm is located in the beautiful Norfolk countryside on a quiet lane less than ½ a mile from the A11. Just follow the brown tourist signs for World Horse Welfare USE OF THE WHIP IN RACING The whip has a role to play in keeping a horse and rider safe, but we question its use in racing to make a horse run faster. Here is our position on the whip: We are often asked why horse riders and jockeys carry a whip. The answer is that a whip can have an important role in keeping the horse and rider safe when it is used to get a horse’s HORSE CRISIS IN THE UK Several factors drive the horse crisis which together have created a systemic problem. Overbreeding: There are simply more horses being bred than there are homes for, and horses and ponies can be sold for 10, as seen at sales across England and Wales, or even be given away free. Overbreeding can be a result of naivety as owners and breeders HEADSHAKING IN HORSES Although headshaking was historically thought to be a behavioural problem, we now know that in many cases the condition is caused by extreme pain across the face. This pain causes the horse to headshake, strike out at the face or rub the face in an attempt to gain some relief from the pain. There are many reasons why a horse mayheadshake, with

Our research has revealed that equines in the EU are hugely versatile, fulfilling many roles – from a wild animal to a working horse; a pet, to an elite athlete HORSE WELFARE IN SPORT When horses are used in sport responsibility for their welfare rests on the shoulders of those who own, train, ride and care for them. Horse sport increasingly needs a ‘social license’ to operate, meaning it must behave ethically and responsibly if it is to continue to maintain public support. HORSE WELFARE AT SLAUGHTER The slaughter of horses is a very emotive topic but it can be an acceptable end of life option. We believe that if horses are to be slaughtered, this should be done humanely under robust regulation and their welfare fully monitored throughout. USE OF THE WHIP IN RACING The whip has a role to play in keeping a horse and rider safe, but we question its use in racing to make a horse run faster. Here is our position on the whip: We are often asked why horse riders and jockeys carry a whip.
