Since time immemorial, the Santo Domingo Pueblo has traded seashells from the Gulf of California and the Pacific over regular trade routes. Pendants cut from these glossy shells in various forms were overlaid with designs in abalone, jet, and turquoise. This exhibition examines the evolution of southwestern textiles made between about 1860 and 1880—a time of tremendous change as American occupation and the eventual coming of the railroad influenced trade, commerce, and the exchange of ideas among various residents of NewMexico and Arizona.

Delbert, born in 1976, is one of eight children. He lives in the Farmington area. Besides his artistic career, Delbert has studied and worked as a physical therapist, an auto mechanic, and, most recently, he is pursuing electrical studies for his journeyman’s license. In 1968 a talented 28-year-old artist named Eveli Sabatie moved from Paris to San Francisco. Her grandmother is Rachel Namingha, her mother is Priscilla Nampeyo, her aunt is Dextra Quotskuyva, and her sisters are Jean Sahmie, Nyla Sahmie, and Bonnie Sahmie. Besides raising five sons to become accomplished silversmiths, she find time to turn out some of the finest Indian jewelry found today. Anderson, Hopi, was born in 1956 in Shungopavi Village on Second Mesa. He was always artistic, starting with drawing and kachina carving. Beginning in 1985, he created a collection of kachina ornaments, usually introducing a new one each year in December. For about the last five years, Anderson has been crafting Hopi overlay silverjewelry.

Harold Littlebird is from Laguna and Santo Domingo Pueblos located in New Mexico and now resides in Florida. He was born in 1951 to Andrea Sarracino (Laguna) and Tony L. Bird (Santo Domingo). Mary Lovato is a third generation jeweler from the Pueblo of Santo Domingo. Besides raising five sons to become accomplished silversmiths, she find time to turn out some of the finest Indian jewelry found today. Anderson, Hopi, was born in 1956 in Shungopavi Village on Second Mesa. He was always artistic, starting with drawing and kachina carving. Beginning in 1985, he created a collection of kachina ornaments, usually introducing a new one each year in December. For about the last five years, Anderson has been crafting Hopi overlay silverjewelry.
