A FAMILY TRADITION
A Family Tradition. When the hooligan are running, the rivers and harbour In Haines, Alaska host a fiesta of wildlife that congregate to feed on this little fish that First Nations prize for its high fat content. Sea gulls, eagles, sea lions and even whales feast on the bounty when it arrives. FIVE SUPERB WINES TRIED WITH BEEF WELLINGTON This wonderful wine from the south Rhone Valley of France is the ultimate blended wine, and can be composed of up to 13 different grapes. This version uses three, two different harvestings of Syrah grapes, with Grenache and then Mourvèdre grapes added. The wine had aKING OF BOWLS

This grain gets processed on the farm into a variety of livestock feeds and then sold to local farmers and outfitters. The main livestock feeds sold are for chickens, pigs, horses and cattle. ORCHIDS IN AND AROUND WHITEHORSE Orchids In and Around Whitehorse. The calypso orchid, sometimes called the fairy or venus slipper, was already blooming by the end of May and the rest will follow soon. I suspect that the Platanthera obtusata, known as the northern bog orchid, will follow soon. The height of bloom for orchids in the Yukon is mid-June. BEAUTIFUL REASONS TO WAIT FOR SPRING Prepare the planting bed by adding organic matter such as peat moss and compost. Bulbs do quite well by adding bone meal, which aids in strengthening the stem of the flower. Water the bulbs with warm water, cover with soil and wait for spring. If you feel you need to mulch because of a less-than-ideal growing location, use only peat moss. HARVEST AT THE YUKON GRAIN FARM Grain Harvest. The last to get harvested is the grain. The Yukon Grain Farm grows approximately 300 acres of barley, rye, oats, wheat and field peas. This grain gets processed on the farm into a variety of livestock feeds and then sold to local farmers and outfitters. The main livestock feeds sold are for chickens, pigs, horses and cattle. ORCHIDS IN AND AROUND WHITEHORSE Orchids In and Around Whitehorse. The calypso orchid, sometimes called the fairy or venus slipper, was already blooming by the end of May and the rest will follow soon. I suspect that the Platanthera obtusata, known as the northern bog orchid, will follow soon. The height of bloom for orchids in the Yukon is mid-June. BEAUTIFUL REASONS TO WAIT FOR SPRING Prepare the planting bed by adding organic matter such as peat moss and compost. Bulbs do quite well by adding bone meal, which aids in strengthening the stem of the flower. Water the bulbs with warm water, cover with soil and wait for spring.
