PELORUS — USS SLATER Pelorus. The Pelorus, or center line gyro repeater, is mounted on the flying bridge. It is a key instrument in piloting the ship close to shore and obtaining the true direction of nearby ships. Mounted on a stand, the gyro compass can be fitted with an azimuth or "bearing circle" with site vanes that enable an observer to look through thevanes

The Model 16-278A General Motors engine ( as shown here would be the forward outboard side, blower end, of Engine 1 or 2 in B1 or inboard side of #4 in B3), four of which were installed aboard the SLATER, is a 16-cylinder V-type engine with 2 banks of 8 cylinders each.The engine operates on the 2-stroke cycle principle, is air started, and is rated at 1600 bhp at 750 rpm. 40 MM — USS SLATER Twin 40 MM Guns. As commissioned in 1944, the SLATER carried one twin 40 mm Gun with MK51 director, located on the superstructure aft on the 01 level. A set of torpedo tubes were located on this deck just aft ofthe stack.
K-GUN — USS SLATER The K-gun consists of a smooth-bore barrel attached to an expansion chamber fitted with a breech mechanism. The breech plug houses a firing mechanism that can be fired by local percussion by lanyard or electrical firing controlled from the bridge. Note the short stump to the right of the projector's main arm, into which the explosivecharges
SLATER'S GREEK SERVICE Eagle is the literal translation of the ship's Greek name, Aetos. The four DEs acquired by the Hellenic Navy were named after wild animals: Aetos-Eagle, Ierax-Hawk, Leon-Lion, Panthir-Panther. The four DEs acquired by the Hellenic Navy were named after wild animals: Aetos-Eagle, Ierax-Hawk, Leon-Lion, Panthir-Panther. Below the fantail are the two powerful 6 foot propellers that propel the ship and the large twin rudders used to steer the SLATER. DESTROYER ESCORT HISTORICAL MUSEUM During World War II, 563 Destroyer Escorts battled Nazi U-boats on the Atlantic protecting convoys of men and material. In the Pacific they stood in line to defend naval task forces from Japanese submarines and Kamikaze air attacks. Today, only one of these ships remains afloat in the United States, the USS SLATER. Moored on the Hudson River in Albany, New York, the USS SLATER has undergone an extensive restoration that has returned the ship to her former glory. The museum offers one hour guided tours, youth group overnight camping, and a historic location to hold naval reunions. SLATER IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! OPEN FOR TOURS : WEDNESDAY - SUNDAY, 10 AM - 4 PM, THROUGH SUNDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2021. WE ARE ALSO OPEN FOR HOLIDAYS INCLUDING: MEMORIAL DAY, INDEPENDENCE DAY, LABOR DAY, COLUMBUS DAY, AND VETERAN’S DAY. HISTORY
Destroyer Escorts were built to escort convoys across the Atlantic Ocean and protect them from U-Boat attacks. They stood in line in the Pacific Theater to protect shore bombardments from Kamikaze attacks. DE’s, DER’s, and APD’s that survived World War II went on to serve in the Korean, Vietnam, and Cold Wars for the United States and several other navies around the world.Learn More
