Amongst lager heads, Rothaus @badischestaatsbrauereirothaus holds legendary status with it's awesome old school designs and awesome lagers. Brewed in Grafenhausen located in Germanyâs Black Forest, their beers have always been an after work staff favorite around OH and youâll often find a case or two hanging out in the warehouse cold room. The team at Rothaus noticed our love for their lagers and gave us a chance to collab on a single-decoction pilsner brewed with grains from their local maltster, Best Malz, and a pallet of Tettnanger hops from their farm-of-choice in Germany. Brewed with naturally occurring wild yeasts. Four Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels became known as the Funky Four after they spent 1.5 years holding cherry port at a Leelanau winery before heading to Jolly Pumpkin where they held La Roja and Biere de Mars for four years. We brewed 10bbls of Line 5 Batch 1 and aged it in the Funky Four and brought in one fresh, wet Buffalo Trace barrel and blended them together. As years passed and our oak aged beer became more robust, we discovered many unique, interesting, single barrels deserving of a special release. Barn Owl was created as a response to these lone wolves, and has grown into a diverse, ongoing series that reflects the growing diversity of our barrel program. People have asked over the years why hasnât there been a base Austin? The answer simply is it hasnât been ready yet. It plays well with fruit and oak, but it hasnât been ready as a standalone. Our first Solera beer, which uses fractional blending to generate an ale with a unique distribution of aged components. Every future batch will always have a part of B1 in it and the average age gradually increases over time with each blend, which will add an evolving complexity as the memory packets harmonize with the foeder oak and mixed culture of microorganisms.
