SHOULD I USE CACHING ON A SHARED WEB HOST? With that said, we still haven’t answered the initial question. The general answer: Yes, you should use caching on a shared web host, but you won’t get the same benefits as if you were on a dedicated server. In other words, sure! You’ll get some benefits, but not allof the benefits.

QUICK TIP: OPTIMIZING LOADING ASSETS IN WORDPRESS It’s a two-step process, really: Check to see if you’re on the page you need to be on and exit if you aren’t. If so, add the asset (s). This can go a long way in the optimization of loading assets in WordPress especially when used in conjunction with other LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE IN PHP: A FEW USEFUL PRACTICES In previous posts, I wrote a good bit about working with the Google Maps API.Truthfully, I haven’t worked with it since that post. THE DIFFERENCE IN CURL AND WORDPRESS REQUESTS The Difference in cURL and WordPress Requests. July 1, 2019 / Tom. cURL is a very popular PHP library that I’ve referenced in several posts other posts ( 1 and 2, for example). If you're an advanced developer or just want the TL;DR version of this, skip to the code.. One of the nicest things about WordPress is the ability to customize the look and feel of pages by applying customized page templates. One of the questions I’ve received (and seen elsewhere around the web) is how to actually setup Visual Studio Code debugconfiguration.
PROPERLY WORKING WITH AJAX REQUESTS IN WORDPRESS Properly Working with Ajax Requests. As per usual, since WordPress ships with jQuery, I’ll be using that; however, I also urge you – if you haven’t already – to look at Ajax in ES6 to get an idea as to how to do this natively. Anyway, the idea is this: Rather than setting up some interval, then use the built-in Ajax functions to SANITIZING URLS IN WORDPRESS Sanitizing URLs in WordPress with Its API and Built-In PHP Functions. June 14, 2018 / Tom. Working with user-centric fields in WordPress – such as input elements, textarea elements, or any type of field in which a user can supply their own values is a place that should always be a target of sanitization. Fortunately, the WordPress API WORDPRESS ADMIN MENU: SUBMENU REORDERING September 19, 2018 / Tom. One of the things about working with the WordPress menu API (that is add_menu_page, add_submenu_page, and the like) is that it doesn’t make it easy to reorder the submenu items. Sure, for certain things such as taxonomies or things like that, you can just change the order in which they are registered. THE FILE IS TOO LARGE FOR WORDPRESS In our case, we’re going to need to do a bit of work in the hooked function in order to determine if the file is too large. 2. Check The File Size on Upload. Note that the following function assumes that you already have proper handling setup to determine if the $_FILES array is even populated. That is, if a user is trying to upload a file USING AJAX IN WORDPRESS: LOADING PAGES Using Ajax in WordPress: Loading Pages. September 18, 2014 / Tom /. About a month ago, I wrote a post about single page tabbed navigation in WordPress. In the post, I made the following statement: In some cases, it may be best to load pages via Ajax, in some cases, it’s better to load things up all in the first page load. HOW TO CHECK IF A PAGE IS IN AN IFRAME If you need to check if a page is in an iframe, you can do so by using a single line of JavaScript. Check out a use case and the code.

PROGRAMMATICALLY SEARCH WORDPRESS POSTS BY DATE RANGEJune 3, 2021 /
Tom
TL;DR: The code shared in this post shows how you can modify the query that runs on the ALL POSTS page so you can limit how you search posts to a specified date range. It’s been a little while since I last wroteabout using the
post_where filter for modifying the search query that runs on a given page, such as the ALL POSTS area of WordPress. But given the fact that there are a variety of uses for retrieving posts – and custom post types – in different ways, there’s a variety of ways to use thissingle filter.

ADD CUSTOM LINK TO ALL POSTS SCREEN BASED ON POST META DATAJune 1, 2021
/ Tom
TL;DR: This article outlines the code needed to add a custom link on the ALL POSTS screen that uses a custom piece of post metadata. NOTE: A few months ago, I wrote an article on how to add a custom view to the ALL POSTS screen . This article is not all together the same, but not all together different. Think of it as a more detailed and perhaps for more practical implementation of the concept. ------------------------- Assume that you have a standard post type or a custom post type and you’re going to simply filter by a headline that you define using a mechanism that allows you to save data to the post_metadata table. For example, let’s say that you have a post and it as a piece ofmeta data with:
* a meta_key with the value of article_attribute * a meta_value with the value of headline And you want to use this information to add a new HEADLINES link that automatically filters everything out except articles with thatmetadata.
Here’s how to do it.Continue reading
RESOURCES, WEEK OF 24 MAY 2021May 28, 2021 / Tom
Years ago (maybe a decade – or more, yikes 😬) I used to post links to resources that I found online that I found interesting or useful for other people that were designers, developers, or anyone who was interested in doing something on the web in-general. Case in point, here’s a post from 2010.
A broad umbrella, I know. And then I started sharing stuff on Twitter pretty regularly. But I don’t that much more either. _So_, given that I’ve started keeping a list of things in Apple Notes that I find useful, I thought I might as well return to form and share them here. They will probably have a much longer shelf-life and maybe reach more people between subscribers and tweeting out a link to the post.Continue reading
SORT WORDPRESS POSTS BY DATE April 8, 2021 / Tom TL;DR: If you’re looking for an easy way to sort WordPress posts by date (be it descending or ascending) in the administration area without having users click on the _Date_ column header, you can do so through the use of the pre_get_posts filter that provides a reference to the instance WP_Query running on the page. For examples in code on how to do that, check out the rest of thearticle.

BUILDING BACKCAST, PART 4 February 26, 2021 /Tom
TL;DR: The private podcast account is set up but not yet recorded; I’m looking to do that sooner rather than later. I’m looking to possibly abandon exclusive Overcast support which I’ll briefly talk about. This article walks through the process of defining the conditions for unit testing and how I’ve decided to go about writing the first set of unit tests.Continue reading
