The Ypres region was the backdrop to RAMPARTS - TOERISME IEPER Initially, the Ramparts were little more than an earth wall with moats. The stone walls and towers were built later. Later still, they developed into a complex unit with bastion, advance fortifications, moats and islands. The signposted route is 2.6 km and provides an enjoyable and leisurely 90' minutes walk. There are many relics that remind of the four war years, 1914-1918, to be found in the Ypres region, such as sites, monuments, cemeteries and landscapes. But many attractions and sites in the Ypres city centre also refer to WWI. The most important and most visited is the Menin Gate. MENIN GATE - TOERISME IEPER The official name of the monument is the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. The Menin Gate is the most famous Commonwealth war memorial in Flanders. It was built in classic style after the design by Sir Reginald Blomfield. It stands on the site of the old Antwerp Gate. Tens of thousands of soldiers passed through this gate on the way tothe front.

HERITAGE - TOERISME IEPER Het Steen is located in the centre of the Rijselstraat. It is the only preserved stone house of Ypres that dates back to the late 13th century. Fish was sold on the Fish market - as the name suggests. The fishmongers had to pay a toll in the old toll house (1899), also called Minck House. Two pretty roofed stalls are a bit further away. TRENCHES - TOERISME IEPER Frontline 't Hooghe. Remnants of the numerous mine impacts near the strategically important Hooge can be seen in the garden of the hotel Kasteelhof 't Hooghe. In 1995 a original trench was dug out by the hotel owner. Open every day from 10 am to 7 pm. € 1 donation in themoney-box.

RAMPARTS - TOERISME IEPER Initially, the Ramparts were little more than an earth wall with moats. The stone walls and towers were built later. Later still, they developed into a complex unit with bastion, advance fortifications, moats and islands. The signposted route is 2.6 km and provides an enjoyable and leisurely 90' minutes walk. TRENCHES - TOERISME IEPER Frontline 't Hooghe. Remnants of the numerous mine impacts near the strategically important Hooge can be seen in the garden of the hotel Kasteelhof 't Hooghe. In 1995 a original trench was dug out by the hotel owner. Open every day from 10 am to 7 pm. € 1 donation in themoney-box.
