The first thing I notice about Cripple Crow is that it doesn't have some crazy story behind the recording. Oh Me Oh My had the borrowed and broken four track records, the answering machines, the gun shots. Rejoicing in the Hands and Niño Rojo had Banhart sitting on a stool in a big room, 12 hours a day for two weeks. Drum-led reveries, acoustic fingerboard workouts, calls-and-responses, build-ups, come-downs, more thematic and emotional peaks and valleys than the California landscape, repetition after repetition after FAVORITE 25 FILMS OF 2018 Once upon a time, Derek Smith wrote: “2017 was a year endured rather than lived.” But all due respect to the past, because here we are creeping into this new 2019 and things are so much better than we thought they’d be! True, the year probably felt like 37 years or whatever removed from Rick Deckard’s squared-off tie and malfunctioning memory. And truth be told, the political crisis FAVORITE RAP MIXTAPES OF MARCH 2019 With a cascade of releases spewing from the likes of DatPiff, LiveMixtapes, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud, it can be difficult to keep up with the overbearing yet increasingly vital mixtape game. In this column, we aim to immerse ourselves in this hyper-prolific world and share our favorite releases each month. The focus will primarily be on rap mixtapes — loosely defined here as free (or FAVORITE 20 TV SHOWS OF 2017 It’s boring as fuck to say that a certain year is bad, and every time someone threw their hands to the sky in the past 12 months and offered up a hearty “2017 sucks,” the world lost a hair of its capacity for reason and dialectical thinking. It’s the oldest dismissal in the book, something that’s probably been going on since year zero, and, frankly, it’s just not productive. 2010S: FAVORITE 50 COVER ART OF THE DECADE It’s telling that the decade’s most memorable innovations in cover art have breached the confines of the record sleeve. It’s a stunt Kanye West famously pulled in 2013, when CD copies of Yeezus hit shelves sans insert. The front of its jewel case stripped bare save for the edge of an orange sticker, the disc was exposed like spilled innards — a reflective organ through which one could COM TRUISE | INTERVIEW | TINY MIX TAPES Synthesizer enthusiasts love Com Truise almost as much as its principle member Seth Haley loves synthesizers. If you scroll far enough down a vintage synth-gear message board discussion, you’ll invariably find this post: “Well, you know can sound awesome because Com Truise used it in a song.” Immediately after, you’ll find a YouTube link to one of his songs and a RYAN POWER | INTERVIEW | TINY MIX TAPES Since last year’s LP I Don’t Want To Die on NNA Tapes, Ryan Power has been stirring up love and affection in the pop scene. Lyrically, I mean. And late this spring, his new album Identity Picks will be popping on vinyl via NNA Tapes once again. But the man has been tirelessly working on music since 2002, whether his own or by helping others with theirs in post-production. SEXY, FUN, UNEXPECTED SONGS TO TANGO TO: BECAUSE THERE’S Mix Tapes. Here’s how The Automatic Mix Tapes Generator works: Send us a thought, phrase, question, quotation, or whatever else, and if one of our mix tape robots fancies your suggestion, the crazy set of circuits might just make a mix tape out of it — well, at least a tracklisting for one. Request a mix tape here, and help us compile mixtapes here.

HILDUR GUÐNADÓTTIR Hildur Guðnadóttir is from Iceland, a country I understand to be populated only by musicians. She is classically trained and highly accomplished, having composed scores for plays and films, winning the Icelandic Theater Award in 2011 for scoring King Lear.
