Hyperallergic by Rob Colvin December 1, 2016. The art of Fairfield Porter (b. 1907) might be more admired today than when he died in 1975. If so, it’s because he has given younger painters a way out of their own race with art criticism, academic theory, shopworn irony, heartless formalism, and mannered diffidence as if painting had nofuture.

Born in 1907 in Winnetka Illinois Fairfield was the fourth of five by the architect James Porter and the poet Ruth Furness Porter. He earned his M.A. at Harvard in 1928. ESTATE OF NELL BLAINE The highly regarded gestural colorist Nell Blaine bridged the delicacy of intimate interiors with the viscosity of Abstract Expressionism for most of the latter half of 20 th century. After studying with Hans Hoffman, Blaine would become the youngest member inducted into the American Abstract Artists group in 1944, celebrated for her hard edgeabstractions.
