GARRARD ZERO 100 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG Garrard Zero 100. 1970. 1976. One of the most clever ideas to push vinyl replay to the limit - and a simple one, too. Garrard however didn't invent it but resurrected it from the distant 1950s. If it has a pivot, the tonearm is in fact tangential : the headshell is gradually skewed to keep a constant angle equivalent to that of thegroove.
SONY STR-7055 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG At 3295FF (french Francs) in 1973, this was the high-fidelity of the fairly rich and this still shows today - in spades. Through Denon's trademark magnetic imprint + reading head system, the DP-80 claimed a 99,998% speed accuracy, along with a 75dB s/n ratio. The left side borrows heavily from the contemporary Alpine part of Luxman : black with little black buttons, as on theK-05 / K-04 / K-03.
PIONEER PL-L1000 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG The PL-L1000 is the original export version, assorted with an x-rare Phase Linear satin champagne version named Model 8000 Series Two. The PL-L1000 was visually revised in 1981 : the pretty and practical round shuttle to move the tonearm around was replaced by two basic rectangular pads - this made the PL-L1000A.THE VINTAGE KNOB

KENWOOD L-A1 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG Kenwood's ultimate high-end audio amplifier. Launched in a gradually vanishing market so, like many other early 1990s units, the L-A1 got barely visible and sold poorly. SONY TA-N86B ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG Bestseller of the pre-Esprit series, the N86B is the "little" one - but the best one. Not as problematic as the TA-N88B - in fact not problematic at all - and switchable in Class A, Class B or as a Class B monoblock. SONY PS-4750 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORGSONY PS 8750 FOR SALESONY PS LX2 TURNTABLE REVIEWSONY PS LX510 TURNTABLESONY PS T1 TURNTABLE Great design tricks for a fair LP turntable. A 1975 US ad placed it next to Sony's own 1966 TTS-3000 old-timer, saying that, no matter how perfect the TTS-3000 was, it was a little outdated and Sony engineers were perfectionists as well - enter the PS-4750! The air-filled platter cushions may remind of another contemporary turntable - more remembered because of its "higher-end" origins and all YAMAHA A-1 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG Brands make such units only once : Sony made the TA-N7B, Kenwood the Supreme 700M, Luxman the M-6000, Harman/Kardon the Citation XX, Yamaha made the B-1. Each of those well remembered components did in some way cater to a "revolution" in sound reproduction. SONY TTS-8000 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG The TTS-8000 is an LP drive sold as such or with several Sony bases. As for quite a few high-end Sony audio components, however, "sold" is a sizeable overstatement : it was not exported, was advertised for very little and got relegated to the catalogs' back pages very quickly. The only local Sony to have imported the TTS-8000 was that of the UK: a country where Sony never was neither strong ACOUSTIC RESEARCH AR9 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG Last truly visible Acoustic Research from the beginning of the Teledyne ownership and before the subsequent various ownerships and fortunes. Not that AR had been as successful in the 1970s as it had been throughout the 1960s but at least it had been present. The 1980s and 1990s turned out to be more of a disappearing act improvised in several steps even seeing an attempt at an AR3a reissue GARRARD ZERO 100 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG One of the most clever ideas to push vinyl replay to the limit - and a simple one, too. Garrard however didn't invent it but resurrected it from the distant 1950s. If it has a pivot, the tonearm is in fact tangential: the headshell is gradually skewed to keep a constant angle equivalent to that of the groove. The culprit is the Zero wasn't built very well and was made of fairly cheap LUXMAN L-4 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG A 1980s update to 1970 looks - that "L" series was inherited from the magnificent but very rare SQ202 - would've been better in a wood enclosure but to my knowledge that option wasn't offered.A fair amplifier with PNP/NPN-loaded phono and output stages, the L-4 had its input plugs placed on its underside, as close as possible to the volume board to avoid long lengths of cables back and forth. SANSUI AU-919 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG Second generation of Sansui's most long-lived series : the 07. 07 s got perfected until the late 1990s through various shapes, technologies and internal layouts which made the ultimate AU-A907NRA (1998) something completely different than the original AU-707 (1976) and its later AU-D907 version In between those two extremes were, inrapid succession :
SONY STR-7055 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG The 1970s near-equivalent to the 1960s STR-6120 and STR-6200F - same lineup near-topper status, same quality but a very different internal structure and componentry. Gone was the lavish simplicity and cleanlisness of the cabling and PCB placing of the late 1960s ES units - in came the more hectic connection between boards and stages : lots of inputs and outputs but lots of (very) hectic LUXMAN M-06 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG An extra-rare item outside Japan but a very common hot house flower in Tokyo, Yokohama and Matsuyama. Just like the hot house it followed the tracks of - L-570. Part of the true peak of the Alpine period, the M-06 and M-06a sold like hot cakes. And they are magnificent. And theyare excellent.
SONY TA-5650 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG Sony's V-FET best-seller. And the only V-FET amp holding one little unknown gem, too : 2SK63, small-size V-FET for low-power applications. The 2SK63 was used in YAMAHA M-4 ON THEVINTAGEKNOB.ORG A little best-seller of sorts the M-4! Perhaps more than the M-2, the M-4 circuit is placed within a truly excellent design - stark, bold but not loud. Splendid Yamaha looks and an excellent amp, too, even if the basics of this design were first attempted at by Hitachi with the HMA-3790 and HMA-4590. THE VINTAGE KNOB. ONLINE VINTAGE AUDIO MUSEUM,
