The Theban Mapping Project has been working in Thebes and particularly the Valley of the Kings for nearly three decades. The earliest references we have to modern European visitors in the Valley of the Kings date to the eighteenth century. Early maps, such as that drawn by the scholars who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte's 1799 expedition to Egypt, or those of Giovanni Belzoni (1818) and John Gardner Wilkinson a decade later, indicate that about twenty-five tombs were accessible since ancient times. SETY I | THEBAN MAPPING PROJECT KV 17, located in the southeast branch of the wadi, is the longest and deepest of all the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. It is the first tomb to be decorated with a complete program of religious texts. LETTER FROM DR. KENT WEEKS Letter From Dr. Kent Weeks. The Theban Mapping Project began work in Luxor's West Bank in 1979, mapping its hillsides and making detailed architectural plans of the many ancient tombs it contained, starting with those in the Valley of the Kings. SIT-RA, CALLED IN (?) The tomb is located in the southeast branch off the southeast wadi, immediately beside the entrance of KV 19, south of KV 20, in the eastern cliffs of the Valley. It is a small, undecorated tomb, consisting of an entryway stairway (A), a corridor (B) with recessesand a side
AMENHETEP III
KV 22 lies midway into the West Valley on an embayment on the east side. In plan, it is very similar to the tomb of Thutmes IV (KV 43). It consists of two corridors (B, D), separated by a stairwell (C), leading to well chamber E with shaft and side chamber Ea, a pillared chamber (F) with side descent, a corridor (G), a stairwell (H), another chamber (I), and the burial chamber J. The burial TAUSERT AND SETNAKHT The tomb entrance of KV 14 is cut into the base of the cliff face at the end of the southwest branch of the main wadi. The short open entryway A is followed by three corridors (B, C and D) decorated in sunk relief with scenes of the queen accompanying Siptah (subsequently changed to Sety II) before various deities, followed by representations of the guardians of the portals of the realm of UNKNOWN | THEBAN MAPPING PROJECT KV 52 is located in the west branch of the southwest wadi. This small tomb consists of a shallow square entryway shaft (A) and a single chamber (B). The tomb is undecorated, but contained animal mummies. Site History. SETY I | THEBAN MAPPING PROJECT KV 17, located in the southeast branch of the wadi, is the longest and deepest of all the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. BAY | THEBAN MAPPING PROJECT The tomb of Bay is situated at the end of the southwest branch of the southwest wadi, close to the tombs of Sety II, Tausert and Siptah. The architecture and decoration closely resemble that of the tomb of Queen Tausert. It consists of three corridors (B, C, D) followed by two chambers (E, F), two further corridors (G, H), two side chambers off the second (Ha-b), and a burial chamber (J). TheTUTANKHAMEN
KV 62, located in the main wadi, is the most famous tomb in the world because of the treasures it held intact for over three thousand years. The entryway A is cut into the floor of the valley below the beginning of the entry ramp of KV 9, the tomb of Rameses VI. Even before the construction of KV 9, debris had already been dumped on top of the KV62 entrance.
AMENHETEP II
The burial chamber is divided into two levels: an upper section with a double row of three pillars on a north-south axis; and a lower section, covering one-third of the chamber. In the center of the lower section, sometimes called the "crypt," sits the yellow quartzite sarcophagus of Amenhetep II. There are four side chambers, two to theright
RAMESES X | THEBAN MAPPING PROJECT KV 18 is located in the southeast wadi. The tomb was unfinished and very little decoration remains. The lintel of gate B is decorated with the sun disk on the horizon, and corridor B is decorated with representations of Rameses X with deities. Before 1998, only corridor B and gate C had been cleared. The MISR Project: Mission Siptah-Ramses X finished excavating KV 18 in 1999 and cleared HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE VALLEY OF THE KINGS The reasons New Kingdom kings chose the East Valley of the Kings for their burials are unclear. The high point of the Theban Hills, al Qurn, whose ancient name was ta dehent "the peak," has an almost pyramidal shape when viewed from the entrance to the valley, and therefore some Egyptologists believe it must have inspired the selection.
