THE HUMAN VS. DIGITAL IN HEALTHCARE–BREAKING THE HUMAN Back in September, when Vinod Khosla was predicting that digital health would frog-march physicians into Chateau Obsolescence along with buggy whip makers and battleship designers (while serving his own interests well), the Gimlet Eye felt quite lonely in its skepticism, especially among the hypesters shouting hosannas. Editor Donna can now reassure the Eye of its surprising ally: David COMMISSIONING COST-EFFECTIVE TELECARE DELIVERY SERVICES There’s a major article by Kevin Doughty in the November 2012 CUHTec newsletter (PDF) about commissioning telecare delivery services in the UK. “Many telecare services are at a crossroads. Should they take the managed service propositions offered by several national companies or should they keep as much as possible in-house? ROI TOOL FOR TELEHEALTH MONITORING (US) One of the barriers to wider adoption of eHealth and remote monitoring (aside from those organizations using mHealth for ‘no reason’) has been the difficulty of obtaining reliable ROI data.Although there are studies on effectiveness and ROI, they are effectively a ‘snapshot’ of one organization, one implementation at one time. TELEHEALTHCARE: SUCCESSFUL TEST WITH PEOPLE OF LIMITED New University of Michigan research evaluated the impact of automated calls (‘telehealthcare’) from a US-based server to the mobile phones of patients with hypertension in Honduras and Mexico. CLAYTON CHRISTENSEN ON THE BROKEN CIRCLE OF INNOVATION–AND Clayton Christensen, who many of us know from ‘The Innovator’s Prescription’ on disruptive healthcare, in his New York Times article discusses the three-stage cycle of innovation that powers economic growth and jobs, and what has happened to break it. The circle: ’empowering innovations’ (including telehealth and mHealth)–which he defines as transforming costly and complicated BRITAIN'S BIGGEST CARE HOME OWNERS HAVE DEBTS OF MORE THAN An indication from The Independent and Corporate Watch that the worrying prospect of more care home providers going bust may be closer than we feared. It’s not a problem technology is going to solve but it is inextricably linked to declining council budgets which are part of the problem and which will be further hit if councils have to pickup the pieces.

OUR DEFINITIONS
Telehealth and Telecare Aware posts pointers to a broad range of news items. Authors of those items often use terms 'telecare' and telehealth' in inventive and idiosyncratic ways. Telecare Aware's editors can generally live with that variation. However, when we use these terms we usually mean: • Telecare: from simple personal alarms (AKA pendant/panic/medical/social alarms, PERS, and so on) through to smart homes that focus on alerts for risk including, for example: falls; smoke; changes in daily activity patterns and 'wandering'. Telecare may also be used to confirm that someone is safe and to prompt them to take medication. The alert generates an appropriate response to the situation allowing someone to live more independently and confidently in their own home for longer. • Telehealth: as in remote vital signs monitoring. Vital signs of patients with long term conditions are measured daily by devices at home and the data sent to a monitoring centre for response by a nurse or doctor if they fall outside predetermined norms. Telehealth has been shown to replace routine trips for check-ups; to speed interventions when health deteriorates, and to reduce stress by educating patients about their condition. Telecare Aware's editors concentrate on what we perceive to be significant events and technological and other developments in telecare and telehealth. We make no apology for being independent and opinionated or for trying to be interesting rather than comprehensive.WEBSITES WE LIKE
